Bill that would make it a felony to purchase a child for sex in California passes Assembly, heads to Senate

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A California bill that would create harsher penalties for people looking to purchase a child for sex has unanimously passed out of the California Assembly.

In California, it’s currently a misdemeanor to purchase a child for sex. Senate Bill 1414 would make it a felony.

Forgive me for asking, but why is this not already a felony with some seriously severe penalties?

  3. How about an automatic death penalty with appeals limited to one. No recidivism for sure.

    1. Florida has the death penalty for child sex cases where the child is under 13yoa. Of course the Florida democrat politicians all screamed bloody murder over it being passed in the Florida legislature and then signed by Governor DeSantis.

  4. How about an automatic death penalty with appeals limited to one and the convict MUST stay in prison until death or successful appeal. No recidivism

  8. Just being a passant and pitching about word useage in legislation.
"Making it a felony to buy a child for sex." Slavery is already against Federal and State laws, and both the seller and the buyer would be criminals.
Renting the sexual services of children is also not legal, under several areas of law.
Pederasty and predatory pedophilia are evil, and should be punished, but this kind of misuse of language opens the door to unintended legal consequences.

  9. I could be mistaken, but I remember reading it was changed to a misdemeanor to 'protect LGBT-etc and trans people'.
Which would tell you an AWFUL lot about the people involved.

    1. But if you point out that the representatives that changed the bill are of a certain ethnic background, the ADL jumps all over you.

  13. Well, I'm having a problem right at the start with the purchasing a child thing.
Buy a kid to help around the house and when she turns 18 start having sex, Is that still a felony?
Or, buy a kid so dad has a fishing buddy and he asks the kid if he wants to hold the big one. Felony?

  14. Why would you expect democrats to make slavery a felony?

  15. didn't they just pass a law that said its' OK for schools to not tell parents when the teachers convince little Johny that he is really little Janey? Asking for a friend.

  16. Odds are this is already against the law, but it is an election year and the politicians want to act as if they care.

  17. Pretty damn disturbing they have to try pass a law for that.

  18. "why is this not already a felony with some seriously severe penalties?" Simples: the tossers who make up legislation are 4kin' useless. It's the same on this side of the lake politicians and "civil servants" rise to the level of their own incompetence.
