In California, it’s currently a misdemeanor to purchase a child for sex. Senate Bill 1414 would make it a felony.

Renting the sexual services of children is also not legal, under several areas of law.
Pederasty and predatory pedophilia are evil, and should be punished, but this kind of misuse of language opens the door to unintended legal consequences.
I could be mistaken, but I remember reading it was changed to a misdemeanor to 'protect LGBT-etc and trans people'.
