California Gov. Gavin Newsom calls legislators into special session to find ways to cut gas prices

California lawmakers will come back in a special session after they wrapped up their legislative year in order to debate measures proposed by Gov. Gavin Newsom that are aimed at reducing gas prices at the pump.

Newsom called the Legislature into the special session Saturday after Democrats in the Assembly pushed back on his efforts to pass an energy package that he unveiled last week. California must act now to "prevent price spikes next year and beyond," he said.

Yeah. Maybe he should quit worrying about spikes and take a look at reducing the everyday price of gas in California compared to the rest of the country by cutting taxes.

  1. Take all the politicians, bureaucrats, and hangers-on to a year long retreat - no communications allowed...and the problem would be solved. Would cost as much as having the marching morons stay in their office, and be much more effective.

  2. Sacramento is just like DC. They're a bunch of greedy bastards. They don't understand what being fiscally reasonable is. It's a twostep process, stop spending and cut taxes.

  3. One thing you can be absolutely certain will not happen, is cutting taxes.

  4. Total bullshrit. Most places in California you can find gas below $5 which is not overly high here. Electricity rates are higher than ever and are causing serious pain to many. My last 2 months have been over $1K

  5. The only way for California to cut gas prices is to cut its gas tax of $0.60 per gallon which is on top of the federal fuel tax of $0.18 per gallon and California's sales tax. They would look really stupid doing so, because they just raised it to $0.60 from $0.58 as of July 2024, and any cut in the tax would have a strong odor of "election interference."

As of now, California's sales tax on gasoline is 2.25% (plus district/county sales tax) and 15% on diesel.

The useless parasites Under the Dome have regulated every industry in California into the highest price place in the nation. All they have to do is collectively sit in front of a mirror to see the real problem. The rest is dog and pony show antics. Screw Gabbin Nuisance and his election ambitions.

    1. Well, I don't think my departure cut gas prices but I have the satisfaction of knowing I'm no longer feeding the Beast with my tax dollars.

  8. Shut down the Air Resources Board and repeal all their gasoline blending requirements or bans on importing gasoline from other states.

  9. Govt. gets more $'s per gallon than anyone else. Crude oil is about 1/2 the cost in a gallon, and its costs include exploring, test drills, actual drilling, pipelines, and transportation, and the owner of the well gets something too. The other 1/2 of costs includes refining, more transportation, retailing, and taxes.

All those costs other than taxes are required for the product to exist. Govt. is just a parasite on it all.

  11. Taxes should not be more than the oil company's profits per gallon.
