Hari the Hindu couldn't believe his good fortune

A woman lost more than $13,000 after she mailed a check to an individual instead of her credit card company, police say.

The victim contacted the San Marino Police Department to report the incident last week.

Police met the unidentified woman on the 500 block of Berkeley Avenue in San Marino around 1:55 p.m. last Friday.

  1. She should be able to retrieve the electronic image of the obverse and reverse of the cashed check. I can download mine from my bank, courtesy of the clearing house for all checks. If the check is made out to the CC company, it is clearly fraud. I once wrote an app that decoded all of the daily check written by a mid-sized oil company in Houston and then placed the check images into a file folder (named by bank account and check number) on our file servers. I wrote several apps that interfaced with the banks. It was interesting work.

  2. I have memories of writing a check to pay a VISA bill and dropping it off in the bank night deposit box. In early 1996.

I can't even imagine doing something like that now.

I also have to applaud someone for being so absolutely out of touch with her finances that she doesn't even make sure a payment of over $13,000 cleared. I'd be paying really close attention to something like that.
