Been kicking the idea of a couple of mules for our homestead, this was a nice easy bit of information.
ReplyDeleteI owned a racking mule, a jumbo by the name of Molly. Once I got her into a rack gait, it was like riding in a Cadillac... Her sure footedness and a very sweet demeanor and very protective on my Boer goat herd. I had three donkey, a jenny, Clara-belle, her gelded son Nimbus and her jenny foal Sara-belle who were my principle herd protectors. All had distinct personalities and craved attention and yes, ear rubs until my hands cramped. I sure miss them all.
ReplyDeleteNice story.
DeleteRealized that my granddad was a step above most farmers, because he used mules instead of horses.
ReplyDeleteBuicks over Chevys, if you will...
Had a buddy down in Alabama who inherited 15 Paint Ponies and a gated mule and needed help keeping them saddle broke. They call them Rackin' Mules in Alabama as opposed to Waking Mules or horses in Tennessee, same training though. That mule was a far better ride on the trails than any horse I ever rode and was a lot friendlier than any of the ponies. I'd get a mule before a horse any day. Eod1sg Ret
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your posting these kinds of videos. Not necessarily something I would seek out, nonetheless I find them very interesting.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
Now, THAT's a fun video. If I was 40 years younger, I'd get me at least one mule. Only trouble being that I'd probably never go to work, I'd just spend all my time with my cows and my mule(s).
ReplyDeleteI've been told that a mule won't founder like a horse will. Never let either get into the oats so I can't say if it's a fact. Watching a matched pair of mules plow is a thing of beauty.

Good stuff that I did not know. I've thought of getting a Mule. Got one with four wheels and love it. I figure one with four legs would be good too.
