China Strategically Manipulating Strategic Mineral Markets and Disadvantaging the West, Expert Says

During a visit to Portugal, a senior U.S. official claimed that China is flooding the market in lithium as a “predatory” tactic to drive down global prices and beat back competition. If prices are low, the theory goes, it’s hard to attract investors and make mine development in the West economically attractive.

Reuters reported Jose Fernandez, undersecretary for economic growth, energy and the environment at the U.S. Department of State said at a briefing earlier this month that China was looking at the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act, which provides government funding for the development of critical minerals and domestic manufacturing, and responding to the competition it may create.

  2. Well, gooolllly. Surprise surprise surprise.
Look at the paper published about 30 years ago by a couple of PLA colonels entitled Unrestricted Warfare. Clausewitz stated that war was politics by other means. The Chinese have embraced the fact that warfare is _everything_ that can be disadvantageous to your competitors and advantageous to your nation. Economic , cultural, legal…it’s all on the spectrum.
I do believe that some in our government see this and understand it. Many of the rest are compromised and hope that the crocodile eats them last.

  5. The US has enormous quantities of all of these minerals. We choose not to mine them. Refining some of these minerals and metals is dirty and dangerous. We choose to let other countries deal with that (or not). Jose Fernandez needs to do some research before running his mouth.

  6. Pretty stupid to be selling them our farmland.
We shouldn't be doing any business with them whatsoever. The politicians don't care what kind of country they'll be leaving their kids.

  8. In UK we do not actually produce or manufacture anything much. The heavy industry was not green. Drilling or mining is forbidden. Manufacturing of all household goods, clothing and such stuff is all done in the East.
The politicians waffle about Green Jobs but all those wind and solar farms are imported from the East.
China, India, Bangladesh etc. did not steal our strategic industries. We begged them to take them.
    We are royally fucked.
