ReplyDeleteSorry Don Aladio, bad, bad batch.
ReplyDelete"...one of the gas things that weren’t supposed to be pulled, got pulled and there was like a gas leak."
ReplyDeleteThey considered this quote newsworthy and adequate explanation of events.
My guess is they used keck clips on everything and didn't allow for a loose stopper or vent line. Perhaps they didnt have an icebath or water running through the condenser and rhe apparatus spewed gas everywhere. The wasted gas could be scrubbed by bubbling through water to make nitric and nitrous acid solution suitable for cleaning glass.
ReplyDeleteNitric acid generally discolors skin but it also sets gloves on fire, so it's best to work gloveless. This experiment should have been done in a fume hood which would have minimized or eliminated exposure. I don't see the logic in running a gas generator reaction in a closed loop without a balloon or means of relief, but maybe I'm just dumb.
