Veterans day is really becoming one of my more favorite holidays. Not because of any party or gatherings or sparkly fireworks, but because of the feelings it stirs up of gratefulness and significance of heart and sacrifice of those that served. For right or wrong, these people have made it so my family can sleep peacefully at night.
I am lucky to be able to call many Veterans my friend. To them, all other Veterans who read these words, and to all those Veterans outside the sound of my voice, thank you for your service. The prices you paid are reflected in the wonderful life me and mine have lived. Ours is a debt that can never be fully repaid. Thank you again.
I came home from work one Veterans Day and my 7 yr old daughter at the time asked me if I had killed anyone during my service. I told her no and she responded with a disgusted look and said "not even one person?"
Once I asked my dad how many he had killed. That career Marine, combat hardened, past D.I., always stern, demanding of discipline, shot me a most stern look. In a deep throaty voice rising from the bowels of humanity, he said, Don't ever ask me that again.
I was involved in a couple of wars over the years but I had it easy. One was stateside and the other overseas. My heart and gratitude goes out to the brothers I served with that served in Nam. A couple had some serious problems and when they drank, it always ended with them crying and me holding them tight until it was over to keep them from harm. One friend was my neighbor when I was a boy who was in Nam, he couldn’t deal with it anymore and killed himself, I was a teenager then. Let us never forget what our veterans have done for us and what they went through. I’ll get off my soapbox now.
I like Veterans Day. It's a day of reflection for me. There are a lot of evil men in this world. Most of them have never stepped foot on a battlefield. Here's to us and those like us, ... Eod1sg Ret
