I actually worked at McDonalds when I was in High School. I never looked at it as a career path or thought they owed me anything more than minimum wage. I learned a lot. One of the things I learned was that the vast majority of McDonalds are not part of the corporation but are actually franchises owned by families or partnerships that usually only have a few locations. The owner of the one I worked at worked there in the store every day and since he really liked the job I did keeping the place clean I did that quite a lot. He trusted me enough to leave me in the store overnight by myself to do all the after hours equipment maintenance and cleaning. I think about that a lot. That store was his everything and he trusted 17 year old me to take care of it so I did. He was one of the first people in my life to ever think I was worth anything.
Great story. And the best part is that it's not all that unique. Over the years hundreds of thousands of teens have capitalized on their entry level experiences at McD's to spring board their way into a successful life. Every successful journey begins with that very first step.

#1 would have been more intersting if those surrounding photos had been of hangings.
ReplyDeleteMcD's Crew Training was supposed to be a 'must include' on resumes, back in the 80's.
