An evening drive turned disastrous over the weekend after a woman drove her SUV around barriers and plunged down an embankment along a hurricane-damaged stretch of Interstate 40 in North Carolina.
That happened not too far from me where I-40 got washed out by Helene. You'd be surprised at the number of assholes who drive around barriers and try to drive through 5 feet of water. Another example of: Everyone's got thousands of rights and zero responsibility.
Years ago, the road past my farm washed out about a half mile farther down the road. We pulled a log across the road to stop traffic but a woman came along and pulled the log out of the way and proceeded to drive into the washout. Neither she nor her little daughter were wearing seat belts and both were bloodied by contact with the dash. Dad took them to the local hospital and we dragged the log back across the road.
Besides the barricades, you also had to drive around a friggin' forest of signs, barrels, cones, flashing lights, etc. This woman had to have been amazingly stupid, drunk, or both.
Orestimba Creek near Patterson California overflows the bridge crossing it every single year. They barricade the hell out of it, and every year somebody tries to cross it and drowns. Every year.
I know the area well. Dead in the middle of the hurricane damaged region. Fortunately, this idiot killed herself, and no rescuers were hurt. Note that she was from Spruce Pine (NC): familiar with the area, aware of the damage, and could not have avoided knowing the risks- not some tourist, this was a local. Unfortunately, her age precludes a Darwin- if she was going to she's already reproduced.
I bet is was because even though she is old enough to know better, it was the only way she knew to go and could not have a longer detour to bother her.
