Chicago Waves Goodbye to ShotSpotter: A Eulogy

We are gathered here today to eulogize, pay our respects to, and mourn the passage of our dear protective friend ShotSpotter, who succumbed to the woke mind virus after a long and painful illness this year of our Lord 2024.

Alas we are here not to praise ShotSpotter, but to bury him. Yet, while his detractors claimed he was unceremoniously terminated because of his ineffectiveness, the reality is that the opposite is true.

  1. Waste not, want not. Maybe Chicago can sell the gently used ShotSpotter equipment to the federal government who will pay for it with tax money at 3 times the market value so they can donate it to Ukraine.

  2. This is sad news for democrats who, in order to sleep good at night, need to waste money on useless things and encourage crime.
Be assured though, they'll find other ways to waste taxpayer money and support the crime they so desperately want, all with the idea of "we'll promise to end crime so that morons will keep voting for us".

  3. Love the snark. Let's ride the wave, and repeal $200 NFA suppressor tax. Noise is waciss!

  4. Yet another case of the promise of high technology going unfulfilled. And not at all surprisingly, at that. How many times have we been sold a white elephant (at great cost) only to have it later declared a failure. And of course, we don't get our money back, nor do the assholes who wasted it in the first place ever face accountability.

  5. Back in the late 80's I started working in foster care in Detroit. I heard that there was outrage that when pregnant women were being drug tested when they came in to give birth a "disproportionate" number of black women were testing positive for crack cocaine. Well that must be racist. Towards the end of my career it was observed that a "disproportionate" number of black kids were in foster care. I was summarily removed from a state advisory committee. I think it was because I dared to ask if the data had been sorted for anything besides race- you know like income levels, family support. I was told elsewhere that black kids don't come into care in disproportionate numbers but they stay longer. That must be racist too.

  6. How could they function properly when Chicago sounded like a popcorn maker on any given night? I bet the salesman is laughing his ass off while driving his Mercedes.

  8. To be fair, the equipment was clearly defective. For some sinister reason it only detected shots fired by black perps.

    1. Chicagos' lived experience is that shotspotter was horribly rayciss as it consistently recorded a disproportionate number of shots in majority minority areas.
      That deliberate racism has ended.
Now, the people and folk who are shot have time to bleed out before anyone notices them, because no one calls 911 just for t gunshots in the area. Last week one was found shot because a neighbor called in a noise complaint because the victim wouldn't stop screaming in pain.
I wish it was SARC/ , but hey, it's Chicago.

  9. While I hate, with a venomous passion, any and all gov surveillance you cannot say shotspotter don't function as designed. Drop for whatever reason, but take responsibility for your damn decisions.

  10. Chicago. Say no more. Stupidity is the sine qua non of municipal government there.

  11. Eh. So Shotspotter a)improved emergency response; b) saved lives (however worthless); c) reported accurately when and when shots were fired. By all means, get rid of it. That calculation of the worth of a life is going to be handy for limiting damages. $20K times the life expectancy of a pimp is a hella lot less than Sharpton thinks.

    1. ShotSpotter "Improved" response times by less than 2 minutes, did not change the outcome of the victims, and made no difference in crime statistics.

It was a failure the first year it was implemented and it has been ever since.
      Anyone saying otherwise is lying.
