    2. Hang on a minnit...

      It's Delaware, but also Pennsylvania.

I'm in Minnesota but from the UP so I got no dog in this fight.

Things are fucked up all over.

    3. Well bell, speed reading for the L. Then again, pedo joey was born in Scranton, wasn't he? And PA is the state that gave us Fetterman. So, a pox on PA, too. I guess my point is until people stop doing stupid shit, they deserve to get fucked. And repeatedly electing politicians who will crank up the taxes they are extorting from you is an own goal always and everywhere. Little different than dick punching oneself and complaining it hurts. Yeah, stop doing that.

  2. Damn. Glad those folks are waking up to the fact that they'll never own their own home. They work for and rent from the state.

    1. And still have to pay the insurance, the maintenence, and all the repairs.
Our two largest household expenses are insurance and property taxes.

  3. County Council is working on providing a tax rebate for first responders

And there it is, special laws for special folks. The 14th amendment be damned.

  4. I said it before You don't own your house even if you have no mortgage. The local government owns it and you pay rent in the form of property tax

    1. Absolutely. Now, if we could just get rid of public school districts, we'd eliminate the principal reason for the existence of property taxes to begin with. Other items like Police and fire protection could be funded from sales tax revenues, although most locales would have to get their expectations in line with reality, instead of blowing so much money on eye candy BS.

And yes, this is an issue across the entire country.

  5. Yep 300 a month on a house I own lock stock and barrel. Makes me see red twice a year. Not sure what it benefits me.

  6. Long county Georgia had a 27% increase in property tax. The County Council Chairman was recalled as were two other council members. The county has gone through massive growth and development to the point of needing to increase the capacity of their schools by 70%.

  7. I didn't mind property tax when it went to schools (mostly) and services (cops, fire) and we actually got some value for it. Gotta pay for shared services somehow. Today, I'd rather pay cops and firemen (and other county gov services) via a sales tax, and let the schools compete for money from the state tax coffers via school choice vouchers. A sales tax is highly visible, hits everyone (avoids freeloaders), and can have carve-outs (food, etc) to minimize the impact on low income people.

Let the state fund education K-12 from the state budget. Sales tax by preference, but income tax if you must. Either way, put a dollar sign on each kid; pay anybody who'll educate 'em to the parents' standard; and send a check based on monthly attendance. No show, no pay. No forced attendance- up to the parents. Pass an equivalency/competency exam at 12, no problem, here's your diploma.

In other words, no property tax. Good idea, worked OK when the schools weren't incompetent, but today- nonstarter.

  8. The name of the game - especially in Pa. - is to give special property tax breaks to certain groups - and that reduces the pool of voters who are against property tax increase.

"Oh, a property tax break for first responders! Of course that's a good idea." (as previous commenter said).

"Oh, yes, we should give the senior citizens a property tax break!"

"We have to do something for Disabled Veterans! Who could possibly oppose giving Disabled Veterans a reduced property tax rate? Yeah! Let's do that! Let's give all the Veterans a tax break! Hooray!"

And just like that, there aren't enough voters to stop the local government from increasing property tax. The ambulance squad and the old folks and the veterans all agree with the School Board and the county commissioners and the mayor that we need to raise property taxes.

That's what passes for a "Republican" in Pennsylvania government. Pledges to "reduce taxes" and goes to Harrisburg and comes up with gimmicks like this. And play it both ways by saying they "support education", which really means "support education SPENDING". Plus the rural ones will score a $2,000 grant for the local volunteer fire department and shoot press releases like a firehose at full volume - but they don't want you to know that the bargain required them to support millions and millions to subsidize Philadelphia and Pittsburgh city services.

I'm afraid Mr. Trump is doing the same thing with the income tax. No tax on tips? No tax on overtime? No tax on Social Security? Ummm... the rest of us have to make up the difference? Or we just add it to the national debt?

Now Steve Bannon of all people is pushing "tax the rich! tax the corporations!" It's pathetic. He sounds like Elizabeth Warren. Really. Good grief. A month before the inauguration and it's already getting weirder than weird.

  9. Shit, I need to move there.

I'm in SE Pa. and pay over 5 grand a year for school and property. We pay for our trash on top of this. We have a well and septic and our kids have been out of school for many years. What in the fuck am I paying for? Talk about a tax on stupidity...

  10. it the damn school tax that is a killer. property tax is not too bad, but the fucking school tax ?
like 3 times higher and for what ? damn high school is always having "fund" drives of some sort or another. and here in this little area, it like 1/4 of the class of 78 work at the school. the main reason why to get hired there. medical insurance. and a steady check.
they enjoy a gold plated medical plan with dental. I wonder how much that shit cost each year ? oh, yeah. you get a break on school tax once you hit 72. I wonder why it not higher as they seem to want every penny they can get out of you. oh, yeah. you have to go there and prove you are 72 with 2 or more forms of ID. trusting lot of assholes how aren't they ?
