Grocery tax cut, immigration bills among first filed in Tennessee
(The Center Square) – A proposed grocery tax cut and bill addressing illegal immigration are among the first filings ahead of Tennessee's 2025 legislative session.
the same thing is going through our house now just south of you with our governor's approval. we'll see if something happens, remember we have Bennie Thompson, the jan 6 ringleader in our arena, which is not a good thing for us .Bennie Thompson is a representative of the poorest area in the country and he want's to keep them that way. welfare recipients will always vote democrat. look at the blue counties on the map, that's where the free money flows across the US to the bums. those who milk the system. best of luck guy's.
"Most states have eliminated the tax on food and food ingredients." well, yeah, but it's a bogus argument because most states have the intrusive INCOME TAX - which also carries an extra paperwork cost - even if you don't owe any income tax.
The IRS Free File providers is free for Federal but they charge around $20 for the state tax return.
If you do something like TurboTax they'll hit you for $39 for the state return - and it's not "Free" unless you qualify for the "Free" Federal - which is very limited. Did you get unemployment, even for 1 week? Sorry, no Free for you. Did you qualify for the credit for contributing to a retirement plan? No Free for you, either. Did you change jobs and they cashed out your 401(k)? Ummm... hard to tell from the fine print about that one. 37% are eligible for Free, they say, in fine print.
And if you got to a Block office or to Shady's Quick Tax and Payday Loan storefront, well, hey, we'll just deduct all these fees - and a "loan" fee - from that Child Tax Credit you're so happy about - and you can have the instant refund. (Too many people jump at that because they know they're playing with the house's money.)
And did you work in two states during the year, like you're in Jersey and did another job in New York? Lucky you, you get to file - and pay for - TWO states' income tax returns.
God bless Tennessee - and Florida and Texas and a few more - for doing just fine without a state income tax on individuals. Tell the grocery whiners to check out and move to another state if they don't like it.

Grocery taxes are one of the most evil taxes ever foisted on the proles. You can cut out spending on most things, but you have to eat.

Retired USAF, I buy most of my groceries on base. No taxes and better quality food at better price than Costco/Sam's.
