I wonder at times if we are truly worthy of them. Evidently this individual was. Loyal and dedicated to the end. People could truly learn a thing or two from our canine friends.
Two days ago my Nephew put down his thirteen year old yellow Lab. He's had labs his entire life so he's been here before though it never gets easier. He wrote and said he buried her and lay down beside her grave while she slept. She was one very special lady but then they all are. Kind of a reverse of the picture.
The wife and I have an understanding, if either of us die, the dogs have to be shown. We don't want them thinking we abandoned them. They understand death.
There's a drawing going around to the effect of "When I die, make sure my dog sees my body. Dogs understand death, and I don't want him to think I just abandoned him." Looks like this guy did just that.
saw that, made sense...poor dog would sit by the door waiting til his last days, otherwise but he would be patient, not feel abandoned, just patient...til the end
Like that Akita who would go meet his owner, a professor, every day at the train station after work. The prof passed away at work and the dog kept going back to the train station until he passed away a number of years later.

It's hard enough to lose one of my old buddies when they die a natural death but when they have to be put down it increases the strain on the heart.
ReplyDeleteIndeed.
DeleteI do believe dogs feel the loss as we do as humans, maybe more so because their more loyal. I feel sad for the dog
ReplyDeleteGreyfriars Bobby wasn't the only one.
ReplyDeleteLord make me half the man my dog thinks I am.

ReplyDeleteI don't believe any animal understands "death". They do, however, recognize "dead".
DeleteWhat you believe ain't necessarily so.

I had that exact conversation with my wife recently after I had a health scare.
