The last thing we need is more political censorship, and with Trump in the Oval Office, our future on this front looks bright. However, states across the country are introducing bills that aim to censor kids online and take parents out of the equation when it comes to deciding what is best for their children and technology. No matter how well-intentioned these ‘kids’ online safety’ bills may be, they present an unconscionable threat to our most fundamental freedoms, such as freedom of speech and parents’ rights. To protect these freedoms, we must categorically reject these bills and other efforts to empower the government to censor our speech.

Back in the pre-internet 1950s my parents were the sole arbiters of what I watched on the 4 channel, rabbit-ear TV. Now parents have ceded their responsibility to government and as we know government tends to err on the side their “you-vill- obey” authoritarian mind-set.
ReplyDeleteWhile I understand that argument I totally disagree... It's not the federal government putting restrictions on the Internet it's the states. The representatives of states that it's voters are petitioning for the limits on mostly porn sites are within their judicial powers.. Porn is not a free speech issue, that's a fake argument, porn is a product and like most every other product it has restrictions on it.... We have restrictions on tobacco, alcohol, firearms and even age limits on being able to get loans or own property..
ReplyDeleteIf porn is your thing then fine I have no problem with that if you are an adult, get a VPN or whatever and watch it..

Agree. Normally I'm all aboard with the Tennesse star's articles, but they don't even address "this is about porn" in this article, which seems a little dishonest, to be diplomatic about it.
DeleteI have no problem with porn being behind age walls. I think it SHOULD be law. And the legal precedents are already VERY clear on the issue - you're not allowed to put naked ladies on billboards or blatantly display the magazine in the supermarkets for darned good reasons.
On a side note, did you know that MOST mainstream magazines are, in Utah, put on the display shelf with a little black board so you can only see the titles and not the half naked chicks on the covers? It's true, and I'd like to see that practice expanded. And extended to the internet.
