I was told years ago not to use engine oil additives. Since conventional oil already has some, you might be mixing in something that doesn't play nice. Made sense to me.
ReplyDeleteYou damned kids using your synthetic oil and oil from the ground. Whale oil is the bee’s knees heh heh heh
ReplyDeleteI had a watch repair guy who found an old unused can of whale oil. He said that it was far superior for the lubrication of fine gears and springs. He protected that can like it was gold.
DeleteMatt
Mr. Browning said use it on his .45ACP sidearm...
DeleteI used to buy re-filtered used oil since oil never wears out. Haven't seen it in years.
ReplyDelete"re-filtered used oil" ...oh boy, it was on a rack outside, in a mason jar with a funnel cap, looking nice and brown.....we rebuilt a 216 Chevy that had been using it....ugh 4 lbs of gunk in the pan.
ReplyDeleteUsed to be an Exxon Jobber. Before we could build a lubricant re-packaging plant, did a week training in Houston. Very educational.
ReplyDeleteSynthetic was superior for industrial lubes. Then. Vehicles, (back then) not as much. But now, yes. I swear by Mobil 1. I'm a Toyota Truck guy, and my local dealer only uses Mobil 1. As I once was a "licensed" tribologist, But (gasp) the viscosity used now is SAE 0-20W. In the SC Lowcountry. Left the ESSO biz in '89 when 10W-30 was the norm.
I put a new engine in my truck about 3 years ago and run synthetic in it for as little driving as I do. I just did the 4th oil change in it so it's got about 12.5k on that engine. It should last me the rest of my life at this rate.
DeleteWe use synthetic oil in our outboard drag racing engines but only after we break them in with petro oil. I find the rings seat better & keep better compression longer. And Redline sponsors us.
ReplyDeleteThere's a bunch of great videos on youtube on this subject by "the motor oil geek".
ReplyDeleteI'm a big believer in synthetic, run it in my truck, and lawnmower, ran it in my bike..
ReplyDeleteJD
supposedly dino oil best for air cooled motors, but that may have changed....
ReplyDeleteRegular oil is getting hard to find, at least out in the PNW where I live.
