I did first grade in a one room. My brother graduated from that school, grade eight, and my two sisters were in the fourth and sixth grades when we moved to a town that had a big school first though twelfth. No kindergarten. My grandmother taught one room until she retired.
Back in Virginia, not too far from the West Virginia border, I rented an old 1 room back country school house as an apartment. Was kinda creepy, all alone on a cold winters night, like all the memories of 200+ years of education came to roost like dust in the corners. It had a little potbelly stove and the landlord kept a cord of wood for my personal use outside. Wasn't a bad place to live, real cheap for that time. I kinda miss it, the remoteness was absolutely a wonderful escape from the hustle and bustle of the cities.

About 35 years ago my wife taught second grade in a log cabin in Brooklet GA for 2 years.
