20 years after the conclusion of the Battle of the Bulge, veterans of the 84th Division (Railsplitters) & German veterans appeared before the cameras to give their recollections of the battle. In a series that was known as "The Big Picture", this episode entitled "Tried by Fire" gives us a rare and interesting look at the recollections of WWII veterans as middle aged men. 1. I like to believe there are still many American men that would fight as these men did. They are not those assholes parading in the streets selling out America. I think those assholes are a minority. The media wants you to think most Americians are like these jerks. I just don't believe that.

  2. I had an uncle that was 3rd Army under Patton. He got one of his Purple Hearts at Bastogne. I knew nothing about his time in WWII until a cousin and I got back from Desert Storm. He sat us down where he brought out a 1940 bottle of Brandy where we all partook and he told us every detail of his time in Europe during WWII.

    1. Wow. Most of those vets never talked about combat. I guess they only talked to guys they thought could understand.

    2. well, the thing of it is, most people just don't understand it. you have to see the madness yourself. went thru the same thing with my dad and uncle jack after I came home. most people have no idea and can't image just how bad it can get.
but just having someone to talk about it afterwards can sometimes help you get thru it. living when so many didn't. dave in pa.

  4. I watched a documentary on the battle of the bulge. It covered the multitude of warnings from different intelligent sources the allies had received. They were all ignored because that was something they would not do. The allied decision makers had their horse bliders on and everything else was ignored.

  5. My father was there in the 3rd Army, under Patton, in the Corps of Engineers. He never would talk about anything during the war.

  6. Long way from what we have now. Man bun wearing, latte sipping, soft handed phags we call males.

  7. This video was from a documentary series called 'The Big Picture' made by the Army Pictorial Center. As a kid, I used to watch it on Saturday mornings. It was hosted by Master Sargent Stuart Queen, and showed various aspects of Army life. It would never have a chance of being on TV now.

  8. I had a neighbor (lived a mile or two away) who had been captured during the Battle of the Bulge. He never talked about it. I knew his daughter and helped haul hay for her horse with him.
