I keep both a Cold Steel Spetnatz shovel and Tramontina machete (16" blade?) in my locked toolbox in the bed of my truck. They are handy tools when roadwork or brush clearance is required along the ranch roads. Both could serve as self defense (NOT against a firearm) but a beat down - yes, IF it is available to grab at the moment.
Back in the 60's my Dad brought me a "picker stick" from work and told me to keep it under the seat of my Chevy II in case I needed it. Old textile workers will know!
Daughter keeps a 2 foot prybar between seat and door. She has the tip razor sharp and dipped it vinegar to rust so it won't look premeditated, according to her.
Yeah, occasionally I wonder what I'd say if a cop needed to search my truck and asked me if there are any weapons in there. You mean, aside from the gun on my belt, the gun in the locked case, the 4 or 5 knives (filet, bowie, utility, other), the camping axe, the shovel, the machete, the hammer, the mallet, etc. and so on. Seriously, I go camping a lot and just leave that stuff in the truck. And don't forget the toolbox with the understanding that every tool is a hammer if you hit something hard enough.
