Commentary: Getting Out of Forever Wars

Since the 9/11 attacks, the United States has been mired in “forever wars”—prolonged conflicts with no clear victory, draining trillions of dollars, thousands of lives, and economic vitality. A 2023 Pew poll shows 54% of Americans favor reducing overseas military commitments, with 83% prioritizing domestic needs—a clear call for change.

The U.S. can no longer afford years of military overreach. A pragmatic strategy emphasizing diplomacy, allied burden-sharing, and strategic restraint is essential to protect national interests without exhausting finite resources.

  2. We've been in forever wars since Pearl Harbor. We have to pick and choose our fights a lot more carefully. Musk and the Whiz Kids are helping a lot.

  5. Historically, there was a really d*mn good reason for what America did post World War II that no other victor in history did -- we effectively ended the age of empires by telling the other countries:
    1. They could trade freely with anyone else in the world.
    2. They had to outsource their security to the US.
    3. The US would protect the sea lanes, and trading routes.
    4. In exchange, they had to side with the US over communism in general, and the Soviet Union specifically.

A lot of countries put in tariffs against the United States -- and the United States did not respond in kind because we wanted to keep the countries in "our" sphere of influence versus the Soviet sphere.

This worked wonders for making the last 80 years relatively peaceful (if you don't think the last 80 years were relatively peaceful, you need to study world history more).

The Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990s and the value to the Americans went away. The US continued to protect everyone's trading routes, continued to protect global trade, but ultimately, the US no longer has a direct benefit from this. If anything, the biggest benefactor is China who imports the vast majority of their energy, food, and fertilizer, and exports the vast majority of what they produce. Without free, global trade, industrial China no longer exists.

Ultimately, the United States was keeping the global trading order in place for the benefit of China.

And of course, during those 80 years, everyone wanted to piss on the United States for being "the world's policemen." After decades of whining that the US was acting like the world's policemen, the ungrateful @$$ h0l3s in Europe are whining that the United States doesn't want to reprise the role in the Ukraine.

Instead of paying for their own defense in both treasure and blood, the Europeans have been spending their treasure on the nanny state, and then ridiculing the United States for not affording free, universal health-care (since we're spending that money on their defense).

Donald Trump's America First is the logical end result of the US waking up to the fact that we continued funding the cold war for 30 years longer than was necessary. If Europe doesn't want to get overrun by the Russians, they need to figure out how to defend themselves. If they want to keep the lights on, they're going to have to figure out how to get energy from the Middle East without the United States protecting the shipping lanes. The Red Sea is just the start. Frankly, there is zero direct benefit to the United States for protecting the oil production in the Middle East. We are energy independent. If anything, keeping the middle east oil flowing is keeping our competition in business. China has figured out they need to pay the Houtis extortion demands -- Europe, take notes.

Don't get me started on how authoritarian (read anti-Democratic) Europe and Canada have become with arresting people over Facebook posts, financially attacking the trucker protests, the war on farmers, and support the Ukrainian comedian who is in year 5 or 6 of his 4-year term.

  6. Seems like everyone is opposed to any more wars!

Now include in the list of wars we DON'T want the invasion of Canada, the conquering of Greenland and the taking of the Panama Canal.
Canada doesn't want to become a state, Greenland is not interested in becoming part of the US and Panama will not give up their only source of income for no reason!

We are getting out of the forever war business at the same time as we get ready for the next set of wars!

    1. Quit watching CNN. Nobody's talking about invading Canada or conquering Greenland.

    2. Do you see the Canadians or the Danish asking to join the US?

Trump has said: "Canada will become the 51st state one way or the other". What do you suppose "one way or the other" means?

      No more wars!

    3. Charlie Kirk visited Greenland and had an overwhelming welcome from the population. It appears Denmark is the one that doesn't want the US to get Greenland, not the Greenlanders themselves.
As far as Canada goes "One way or another" doesn't mean an invasion to anybody but you. Economic sanctions come to mind.
All that being said, I agree with you wholeheartedly. No more wars!

    4. Correction: the footage they showed of Charlie Kirk showed him speaking to people who were enthusiastic.
When I was in Iraq in 05-06, guys would constantly say “wow the Iraqis want us here!” because an English-speaking Iraqi would come and tell them so.
One or two, out of a crowd of thousands.
Maybe Greenland does, maybe they don’t, but the media ALWAYS manipulates.

    5. We don't want Canada as a state, we want them to pay their own way and stop ripping us off when it comes to tariffs, we have financial and security interest in the Panama Canal and Greenland is already hosting US military bases so...
I think you are a liberal worry wart
