Good luck on privatizing the USPS. It would take an amendment to the Constitution to do so. Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 gives the Executive power over the Post Office, so it makes about as much sense to try and privatize the US Army.
No need to privatize the USPS. Just eliminate their monopoly on "first class letter" service, and their monopoly on access to mailboxes. They'll almost instantly vanish, as private companies will do a across-the-board better job.
You'd have to specify different flags for requesting pickup by different companies, I suppose, instead of the simple red flags we have now. But that's not a big problem. Companies could easily issue stickers to put over your current simple red flag.
A bigger problem would be sabotage and interference from USPS employees.
Sounds like a great idea. For example: "When is a hamburger not just a hamburger? When it costs Amtrak $16 to make. They sell it for $9.50, and taxpayers cover the difference." - WDS
Nice idea, but both the USPS & Amtrac will fail even if they're privatized. As far as the post office goes there’s junk mail, regular letters and packages. Who likes junk mail and who gets regular letters any more. The package delivery is up against DHL, Fed-EX and UPS so there'll be too much competition to be prifitable.
As far as trains go they can’t make a profit anymore because flying has become relatively cheep and lots faster.
I'm on the edge with the post office, although I seldom actually use it anymore... I just can't see it competing one on one with private industry like UPS... Unfortunately the bloat of government is a huge problem with USPS and should probably just be eliminated. JD

I'd be all for Amtrak. Waste of taxpayers subsidies for many years. The only people it really serves are the folks in the East,
ReplyDeleteI'm a little unsure of privatizing the Postal Service though.

I get regular mail all the time. I prefer it to electronic correspondence, especially my bills.
DeleteThat will require an amendment to the Constitution. Article I, Section 8

That's fine...but if it fails, LET IT FAIL. No bailouts & let it be replaced by something by the private sector. Oh yeah. Fuck Amtrak.
