#4 - I have something similar that's a lot easier to empty. https://baganut.com/ The company makes them for a variety of nuts and such. I use an 18" model for picking up sweet gum spiky balls. Works a charm.
Don, I like to walk around barefoot in the yard, too, so my harvester was worth every penny. It's a LOT easier than trying to rake the things into piles and pick them up. If you get one add the weight kit. It helps a LOT, especially in leaves and taller grass. BTW, if you have any erosion problems the spiky balls are almost as good as rip-rap for mitigation.
Anonymous 5:14PM, I don't disagree with you, but was quoted $5K to remove the largest one and the others are next to a public road, power lines, etc. They're all too close to structures, too, some of which don't belong to me.
#4 now let's see it unloaded. Have a single one (one cage on pole handle) and works great picking up the black walnuts. I've seen various sized (how close the wires are) that can pick up spent brass. Wouldn't work well on gravel, but dirt or grass would save a lot of bending.
#7, my old dog jack used to do that too. and when I got the kids a wading pool. he used to "take it over" like. big old lab/whatever mix. really the best 20 bucks I ever spent at a pound. had to put him down at 17. by then, he was blind and couldn't really walk anymore than 10 feet. had a few accidents in the house, but that wasn't a problem. watching him in pain trying to get back up again was. it been a good 25 years now and my kids still talk about him. dave in pa.
Jack was a great dog. he did sire 2 litters of pups with a yellow lab/mix. my neighbor's dog ( he was kind of pissed about that part) but we had no problem with the pups. they went fast after word got out that old jack was the father. he was also a very good hunting dog as well as dealing with the kids. had a uncle that wanted to steal him away from me, but my dad told him that I would shoot him if he tried to take him. one of the hardest things I ever did was take that last ride to the VET with him. RIP buddy. I still miss your ass. dave in pa.
#4 - A couple years ago my wife and I were driving, and I saw a hand-made sign saying hickory nuts for sale. I stopped. A woman had several trees in her back yard, and she was selling the nuts. She wanted $4 for a 1 lb bag. "You shell these yourself?" "Yes'" "That's a lot of work. You're not even making minimum wage. How about $8 a bag." "O.K." I bought all she had. If you've never tasted hickory nuts, they're much better than walnuts. I kept going back until one year I pulled in, and there was a man in the yard. I asked about the woman. She had died since my last visit. I checked Amazon today. Hickory nuts are going for $24.99 for 3 ounces.
#4 I first thought it was Walnuts, but then decided they were picking up potatoes. Finally decided it was neither as none of the Walnuts had hulls and potatoes grow underground. Not sure why anyone would hull the walnuts and toss them back into the ground or dig potatoes and not put them in a container.

#4 "Nut Wizard" is the brand name IIRC. Didn't know they sold them as multiples in a frame though.
ReplyDeleteI think #8 is my favorite though. LOL! Have to start somewhere! And falling down is definitely somewhere!

I have a sweet gum tree in my yard and half the year it's impossible to walk barefoot. Dang, that's a good idea. I'll need to try that.
DeleteAs kids in SoCal, we used to have fights with the Sweet Gum spiky balls.
DeleteAlthough, back then we called them Monkey Balls.
If you have a sweet gum tree what you need is a chain saw.

I'm adventurous, but not that adventurous.

ReplyDeleteAlso have a single one for Black Walnuts. Also was wondering how they'd unload it.

Two possibilities, hand spreading, or simply compressing the lanterns so that the cages open up. That is how I would design it.
