At one time, I was out of work and actually had to use SNAP to help with food. This was while I was hustling side jobs mowing lawns, etc. Not only did we not buy junk food or soft drinks, but we used as many coupons as we could to stretch what money we got from the government. While I sort of felt bad for using it, I also knew that I paid a lot, I mean a lot of money in taxes over the years since I started to earn wages that were taxed, at age 14. I also heard stories but never confirmed them, that some bums on food benefits would purchase soft drinks, dump them out and take the cans back for the 10 cent deposit in order to buy a quart of Malt Liquor. I never confirmed it was true, but the cashier at the Sav-A-Lot store was the one who told me. It is nice that we as a nation are sympathetic enough to try and help feed those less fortunate than most. But we also have a huge problem with obesity in America, and we should encourage our citizens to try and deal with it. I hope that Robert Kennedy Jr. has success with his efforts to MAHA. A good place to start would be to get rid of HFCS, or high fructose corn syrup, from nearly all products that are prepackaged.
The actual SNAP benefit received by those who need it isn't enough for anyone to live on, disabled, elderly, etc.
If someone is buying candy and soda with SNAP instead of food, I'd guess they're probably committing fraud by having these benefits, and I would certainly check the system in place (personnel) that authorized it for them.
They make non minority men use State benefits to get the part D medication coverage. A tiny amount of food comes with this. That way the STATS show disabled white men get benefits "" at the same rate** as minorities and women when IN FACT the amount of food is 1\5th or 1/100 of women or minorities
Nothing will turn you Republican faster than sacking groceries for people using food stamps or SNAP cards. I was a poor kid in HS doing this, watching welfare queens buying steak instead of hamburger, fritos and Cokes and other premium snacks instead of generic store chain canned foods, and then I was the skinny kid helping load the groceries into the trunk of a luxury model sedan. Yeah. Then I picked up my weekly check and looked at what went to the Feds and the State. Republican at 16. Education would help a lot, i.e. if getting SNAP required taking a class on nutrition and cooking.
My first paying job was after school as a sacker at Piggly Wiggly in Charleston, SC in the early 1970s. I can't count the number of times I saw this exact thing.
There is also a trickle down. If people on SNAP are eating crap, they more than likely are not healthy in general and then we are paying their doctor and dental bills because they are going to be on Medicaid as well.
Time to end the SNAP and get the former handout recipients back out into the cotton fields so they can earn a healthy dinner of pig knuckles & collard greens.
If I pay for your food then you are my dependent and I get to tell you what to eat. I'm waiting for RFK to go public on the obesity epidemic. Research Metabolic Dysfunction, Dr Eric Westman and Dr. Casey Means are great places to start. What you are not going to eat (if it were my decision) are foods that make you sick, so I now have to pay for your healthcare.
The diet is pretty simple, no processed foods, no sugar, no artificial ingredients. For the last 2 months my wife and I have been following this diet and we are making huge improvements. We are both over 60. Neither of us us are on prescription medications. We have to be careful what we buy and we have to take the time to cook. If SNAP people need help, then we need to house them in dormitories with a cafeteria.
The seed oils have been getting a lot of attention lately.... Hell most of the stuff the government said was bad for us is actually good; red meat, real butter, whole milk, etc and the good ones are bad for us... Just like adding alcohol to gasoline.. Idiots in charge JD
The ability to buy nutritious food with SNAP is just an unwanted side effect of the real purpose which is to subsidize the poison produced by the the processed foods industry.
the reason that the junk food and cokes, have nutrition facts on them, of that SNAP will not pay for anything without nutrition facts on the product. meant years ago, junk food did NOT have nutrition labels. also, follow J.P.MORGAN's hand on the SNAP program... they receive% of all the money flowing thru

They are right, I should not be telling them what to eat AND I should not be paying for what you eat. Simple!
ReplyDeleteNot telling them what to eat, telling them what others will buy for them.

DeleteTeaching people healthy habits is a good thing. They should spend taxpayer money wisely on healthy food, meat, eggs, cheese etc.

It happened at the Walmart in Escanaba. Buying pallets of cheap soda and then emptying them out to reclaim the cans for cash.
DeleteI've said for years you shouldn't be able to buy any junk food or premium meats with food stamps. Just hamburger, chicken, some pork and vegetables.

Just outlawing seed oils (soy, rapeseed /canola, etc) would go a long ways. Canola is extremely hazardous to your system.
