1 Corinthians 13:4-7 New International Version 4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
In a Me FIRST, throw away world it is Love that matters.
Love is often part of Duty
Robert A. Heinlein said, “Do not confuse "duty" with what other people expect of you; they are utterly different. Duty is a debt you owe to yourself to fulfill obligations you have assumed voluntarily. Paying that debt can entail anything from years of patient work to instant willingness to die. Difficult it may be, but the reward is self-respect”.
My daughter had thick waist length hair. I used to trim the split ends, do hot oil treatments and could do a damn good French Braid. I enjoyed it because she liked it. By ten years old if I loosened everything she could change the oil/filter, points, condenser and other general maintenance. She was good at setting the double points on the 383 and later did the timing. Those were good days. I had a little girl so needed to do girl stuff but taught her boy stuff too. She got off the bus one day painted like French whore. Her mother went nuts. I said, were wearing makeup now? She said, Yup. I immediatly put her in the car and drove her to a place called Merel Norm. I approached the young gal behind the counter and said, can you do something with this? She took my kid in the back room and showed her how to apply the crap. Ya could hardly tell she had makeup on. Every xmas she got two bottles of makeup remover from me in her stocking. If ya can't lick em join em. I could go on and on. Raising her was a crazy time for sure. My hat goes off to the man in the video. I'd like to add my daughter excelled. Proud Dad.
Middle of next month I'm going to California to take care of my daughter after eye surgery. She's essentially alone out there as her Aunts are 500 miles away. She asked for Daddy to come and take care of her for the week of recovery. My spousal unit is pissed at her because she not married and has a passel of grand children. The kid has an engineering degree, math degree and law degree and is an intellectual property attorney. She graduated into Covid and got chewed up and spit out by big law.
It's your kid, what do you do? You man up and take care of your kid and deal with spousal unit when you get back. Am I hiding the upset? Well of course, I'm the Dad, when everything is going to shit, you're the rock of sanity. I am sure the guy in the video has spent many a night staring at the ceiling asking why me, but knowing deep down where he lives in the quiet places, why not me. That's being a Dad, the rock, the one your kid can count on.

ReplyDeleteJust curious because both of my sisters frequented the local shop, but was the place you took your daughter for cosmetics maybe called Merle Norman?
DeleteMerle Norman, that's it. I almost had it right.
DeleteThat's what care is.
ReplyDeletebittersweet, for sure
ReplyDeleteI am not a very cynical person, but I certainly hope that this incredible show of love and affection is not simply done for the camera.
