While it certainly is a great dog, it looks like its stuck in a house with bad parents. That kid is old enough to be taught to be gentle. Nip it in the bud now and you'll have less problems down the road -- and that goes for more than just being kind to animals.
That dog doesn't look like it's being abused to me. I play with and tug on that asshole dog Jack's lips and ears all day and all he wants is more of it.
You do have to be super watchful of this with toddlers and small kids though, especially when the dog starts showing the whites of its eyes. I've got two very gentle dogs, but when my toddler grandkids are around, I stay very close and am very watchful (in an encouraging way) of interactions.
never saw my old dog Slim in a bad mood around kids. and he put up with a unreal amount of tugging and whatnot from them too. if they where doing something he didn't like, he used to lick the hell out of them. honest to God, I seen kids do stuff to that dog that me and the vet wouldn't try. Slim was a 110 pound roadie ridgeback too. and a total pushover for small kids, bigger ones. not so much. adults walked around him if they where smart. unless he knew them, then he was a big goofy dog playful as any I ever saw. I still miss that dog, and so do some of my neighbors just last week I was told a Slim story by my neighbor. dave in pa.
I've seen dogs and cats go beyond the extra mile with small kids then correct and discipline an older teen. Momma dog we had was very attentive when kids held her pups. She would gently insert herself if the child got too rough but she never hurt anyone. She defended my kids like they were her litter. That dog is gonna grow old and probably die with his head cradled in her lap. Friends for life? Yup
dogs do that better than anyone else. my one neighbor told me that she never worried about her 3 girls when she saw that Slim was out in the yard with them. although Gary used to call and bitch at me to come get my damn dog so he could bring HIS kids in for supper or bed time. Slim just loved little kids. I never had a better watch dog than him. once out the front door, he would look across the road to see if the kids where out, if so, off he went to be with them. dave in pa.
We used to babysit a friend's toddler daughter who was infatuated with our GSD-Rottweiler mix. Max was a big mush, and looked so mournful as the little girl tried to step on his wiener anytime he lay down. It got to the point where he would beg to be let downstairs into the basement when he heard her footsteps.

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely. Dogs have moods just like people do and there's times they don't want to be messed with.

ReplyDeleteThe parents should be charged with child neglect. The poor kid's so hungry he's looking for kibble scraps in the dog's teeth
ReplyDeleteShe's looking for the candy she had a moment ago.
