Rich silver deposits were discovered in the Cortez area in 1863. The settlement of Cortez formed as the mines were developed in subsequent years, with a post office being established in 1868. A more detailed early history of the district is included below.
I enjoyed that. However, I wonder if the Bard of Cortez was buried in the local cemetery?
ReplyDeleteInteresting story, I love old ghost towns....

Lloyd G High, The Bard of Cortez, left Cortez in the 1960's. All I can find is that the cemetery is still cared for today by kinfolk. Therefore the article suggests he could possibly be buried there. At least I figure he is dead. Don't know why this is important to me. It just is.

DeleteDon't know if it's the right man but the birthdate adds up and it says he was a resident of Nevada.
Cortez is in Eureka Co where it says he was buried. So, you are probably correct. Thanks. I just think he should have been buried in the old cememery of Crotez. Seems like the right thing to do.
DeleteSorry, but it says he died in Eureka County but was buried in Bly Cemetery Marcellus, Cass County, Michigan, USA.
DeleteWell, hell. Maybe I should read a little closer.
DeleteNo biggie. I can't count the number of times I've skipped over something that was right in front of my eyes.
DeleteWhat I'm wondering though is was he originally buried in the old Cortez cemetery and then later moved to Michigan? That seems to have happened a lot back then.
