Saipan, 9th July 1944. Shortly after 2pm, a Marine Corps cameraman filmed the American flag being raised over the newly captured Marpi Airfield. To the exhausted Marines watching below, it seemed the battle for Saipan was finally over. Just a few hours later, the man who captured this film was dead. But how did a young Marine cameraman, recommended for the Navy Cross, survive one of the Pacific War's bloodiest battles, only to lose his life at the point of victory?
