For pork farmers, the emergency is now. For bacon lovers, it's coming soon

Nearly every day for two weeks, at least one sizable pork-processing plant shut down after the new coronavirus ripped through its workforce.

By the end of last week, plants that process about 25% of U.S. pork were closed.

Hog farmers raise pigs for nine to 10 months before sending them to market. Most schedule the growth of their hogs so they can send some at least weekly, sometimes more often.

  4. Second and third order effects starting to rear their ugly heads already. I kinda thought we had until fall. I wonder what the snowflakes and city dwellers are going to do when they have to pay $20.00 or more for a pound of animal of protein and there won't be any more plant protein, like beans lentils etc, until next fall.

Yet, according to the WSJ, there's lots of meat in cold storage. We'll see.

  5. Here's a video from a rancher talking about how he and many other ranchers are having to put down his stock because packing houses have shut down. So meat and other food products are being shipped in from 3rd world countries.
