I just came back on from two days of no internet from a wind storm that took out the wire to the house. The branch came down and killed the service while I was watching old episodes of TWD, right in the middle of a cliffhanger. Had that happen at the movies many, many years ago; the last five minutes of "Get Shorty" the film melted. It was years before I found out how that movie ended. ... uh oh, recaptha. I hate that, I never can get it to work, must be my eyesight. ... six trys, i hate it.
#2 LAPES, Low Altitude Parachute Extraction System. M551 Sheridan "Tank", of the 82nd Airborne Division, (I bet).
Served in the Eighty-Deuce 1983-86. Buddy who was an Armor Platoon Leader in the 4-68/3-73 Armor (they changed designations), said they lost one of every five dropped this way. You should see what a Sheridan looks like when the LAPES fails.
I was on Sicily DZ when a 130 slammed into the assault strip with it's load intact during a failed LAPES delivery in 86 or 87. It was not awesome. I don't believe it was a Sheridan but it didn't matter, it was a horrific mess that claimed the lives of the entire crew but one and two young soldiers as the 130 broke apart and burned. No aircraft or airdrop accident is awesome.
I'm really liking your 'new' blog site. These gifs took forever to load before - I usually ended up doing them one by one and still waiting. Now by the time I've watched the first one the rest are ready to roll.
The look on the guy's face with the birch log - priceless or an oh fuck moment!
