First-Time Gun Buyers Explain How Coronavirus Changed Their Politics

Scott Kane went 38 years without ever touching a gun. That streak would have continued had it not been for the coronavirus. In March, fearful of the harassment his wife and child experienced over their Asian ancestry, Kane found himself in a California gun shop. His March 11 purchase of a 9mm would have been the end of the story, were it not for a political standoff over shutdown orders and background checks. Now Kane, a former supporter of gun-control measures and AR-15 bans, is frustrated by the arduous process that has denied his family a sense of security. The pandemic has made the soft-spoken software engineer an unlikely Second Amendment supporter.

"This has taken me, a law-abiding citizen with nary an unpaid parking ticket to my name, over a month," he told the Washington Free Beacon. "Meanwhile Joe Bad Guy has probably purchased several fully automatic AK-47s out of the back of an El Camino in a shady part of town with zero background checks."

  1. Where is this El Camino parked that is selling full auto AK-47s? Asking for a friend.

In Kentucky buying guns in parking lots on the shady side of town with no background checks is known as "Tuesday". (Really any day, but Tuesday sounds boring.)

  2. Strange how that works in Tha USA. How is it that in Europe no one is buying guns when this Corona shit started. In the USA you buy guns. Fine. This is your culture. That you have the right to have a gun. But how it is that you even need one, or think you need one. Whose fault is that that you are so scared, afraid of it that someone could threaten you or your family. Clearly, that is government problem. Not only this one is failing in whole, also all the years before this... All governments fail to make the people in USA feel secure.. Without guns. I dont know how any other president would have handled this crisis, but clearly, this one is totally incapable of running a country. Big mouth and Bullshit talk and twitter using, ignoring facts and lying, trying to shut down any criticism is not how a democratic country works. If you want to run a country like that, then you better go to whiterussia. There you may be a dictator. Or behave like one.
Guns! What for? I saw lately a video of a guy threatening a driver with his gun, by showing him he has one. The response was.. Here.. I Show you mine. Mine is legal. And yours? So this is it how it works in the USA? Fine, have your guns. But honestly... this is a poor certificate for a country or better this is proof the government fails totally.

    1. We have a completely different society here than you do in Germany, Roland. Criminals in the bigger cities are bolder, better armed and more willing to kill or injure you. That's one point.
Another is we're more independent here in the States. We don't want the government to tell us what to do, nor is it our government's job to protect us. We want to live our lives freely, without interference from anybody, up to and especially the government.
Our Constitution clearly lays out not only the duties but also the powers of the government, yet they're constantly overstepping those guidelines and limits. Telling us that we must get inoculations or to quarantine and shutting down businesses are examples of those abuses. If they think they can do that, then what's next?
It's really difficult for anybody from Europe to understand, I know.

By the way, I saw the same video. Both guys brandishing their guys were total idiots. That's not how it's done. I'll post it soon so you can read the reactions of my American readers - you'll see that they agree with me.

    2. Meh, Europe has a bunch of rather different societies too.

But the one thing about guns... you need to buy it LONG before you need it, and then train with it. (Especially with short guns... rifles tend to be easier, for the basic parts.) And at least in this part of Europe, public sports venues were closed too, including shooting ranges.

Oh well, my family has enough land that we could put up a private range.

    3. Kenny.. I understand your point. Just for me it's hard to imagine how it should be here in Europe. Guns? In the hands of the morons I am surrounded with? Good night. If it would be like that I probably would run around with a vest and guns myself.
I was in the army eight years.i admit I like shooting and I wasn't bad at it. Still happy we don't have to worry about that people are all armed here. Having a gun is easy. Knowing how to use it totally different. I am also totally with you with the quarantine thing. What they do here i don't like either. But it's a lot of countries doing that. I guess people are annoyed by it everywhere.
I must also admit... I dont k ów mich about USA guidelines and where they are overstepping it. Surely they do and they did here too. 49 years.. And never had something like this. It makes me feel the first time in my life that I don't want to live in any country anymore. Everywhere they are going to tell you what to do. No traveling, wearing mask, take a cart for shopping, keep distance, wash your hands, cough in your elbow..... Like all citizens are babies.

  3. This week I went to a local gun shop looking to purchase some ammo. The owner shook his head and said he “might” have some by end of June. There were only four or five rifles left and only a couple of pistols in the cases. He said he’s looking forward to this summer when he can buy back guns from first-time purchasers. It might be a good idea to shop for a new pistol then and get a good price on “used”.

I just hope new owners got proper training - I hope so, but seriously doubt they will

    1. Our gun shop here in Lafayette is totally stock with both firearms and ammo. There was a brief period when they were out of ammo, but that was a few weeks ago.

  4. "get a good price on “used”" I was thinking the same thing. Went to a gun store I had done business with in the past to look at some used pistols of a particular brand and caliber. Don't expect to get any bargains. This place is selling used for about $100.00 less than new.

  5. Roland, you didn't seem to mind American guns when they kept the Soviets from rolling over West Germany for forty years. Our host was one of those men with guns (or a radio tower) that kept you safe.
I am not afraid of crime. I own firearms to defend my rights against the government. My nation was founded by men who smuggled guns and drugs, rioted, committed treason and shot cops. By men who said "Screw the King" and crossed the mountains anyway. Men who crossed a freezing river at night, on Christmas to stab Germans in their sleep. Just so they could be free. I own guns because I am descended from those men and it is my birthright.

As for Trump. I supported him starting in July of 2015. Now, he has not done as much damage to the nation as any other president in my life time of 50 years. He hasn't done as much damage to my nation as any president in the past 130 years. In May 2020, I am not much of a supporter any more. I don't like that he has not built the wall. I do not like that he has not started the mass deportations. I do not like his gun control orders. But on the whole, he has left me alone. That is the only thing I want from any government, LEAVE ME THE HELL ALONE.

    1. Chris, you are right; he hasn’t done a lot of those things but he’s been kind of busy fighting the entire deep state and that traitorous Speaker of the House, not to mention her followers and idiot Republicans who are too dainty to follow the Constitution so I can kind of overlook his lackadaisical actions.

Personally, I cannot wait to re-elect this man And God help anyone who gets in between me and the voting booth.

    2. Rating a president by the amount of how much of damage he makes is quite poor. To be happy if he don't mess up entirely? That's not how it works. The chancellor in germany is okay. Not agree with all but she is good. I can't tell any chancellor since I was born messed up things in germany. So.... Maybe there is room for improvement on the USA.
And please, don't come with World War 2 stories. Citizens aren't soldiers. I dont have any problem with the army. I have a problem with having gun as a private. But I stated already, that's your culture. And that's fine. I am just happy no one in germany has to have guns to protect himself.

  6. Depending on the store The large sporting goods store had only a few handguns, The local stores were well stocked with guns and ammo.

  7. I needed something a little more punchy than a 22 for my wife, so decided I needed a Ruger PC9 carbine. I ordered it before the panic set in, but it never "arrived" at my local gun store. I believe it did arrive, but the dealer sold it to a buddy, but that's neither here nor there. I was able to get a refund, and found what I wanted on the shelf at Academy in El Paso. I was able to purchase it online for pick up in the store. So, I wound up having to drive from Albuquerque to El Paso to get what I wanted off the shelf, while our Oompah Loompah tyrant governess had our gun stores shut down.

Remember, you can buy long guns in contiguous states to yours.
