Things to consider when buying a suppressor

  2. Some things learned: 1. Some gas impingement guns work fine and some don’t. 2. The actions get really dirty when firing cans. 3. Don’t waste money on subsonic 5.56, a .22 long rifle hits just as hard at those velocities and is quieter. 4. Bolt action guns are much quieter than semi-autos. 5. Thick leather gloves are not thick enough, you still have the let the can cool off for 10 to 15 minutes before swapping to another weapon. 6. .45 ACP, .22 LR and .300 BLK are the most fun calibers. 5.56 out of a 20 inch AR, too. 7. Don’t second guess yourself while waiting for your tax stamp. Nothing out there is Hollywood quiet. You’ll still be happy when your can comes in. My last stamps came in in about five months.

  3. My YHM suppressor on an LMT chambered in .300 Blackout is very quiet with subsonic rounds. At 100 yards you primarily hear the round striking the target. Note for optimal suppression you need to use a subsonic round period. That limits your range to about 125 yards. You'll still pinch a hole in paper past that distance but you lose stopping power. So - larger calibers are better. My solution is an integrally suppressed Ruger 77/44 with a Leopold 6x fixed scope and a folding stock. 44 Special ammo is almost always subsonic so no need to spend $ on special subsonic ammo or to build your own loads. Important to understand how suppressors work to identify the correct solution to a specific challenge. And if you just "gotta have" a fully suppressed 12 gauge (like on No Country for Old Men) then reach out to the nice folks at Cadiz Gunworks to get a Saiga 12 suppressed the length of the barrel. Also remember that if you go with an integrally suppressed firearm versus a screw on can you don't create an off balance beast that is awkward to handle efficiently.

  5. Something else to consider - find a place with a silencer shop kiosk. Even if you don’t order from silencer shop, the dealer can still charge you a fee and use the kiosk. Why? Because at least where I live no one is fingerprinting right now, and the kiosks do it and store the prints for later use if you want. Currently waiting on my Surefire 300SPS to get to the dealer. You’d think they’d have enough sets of my fingerprints since I have 4 tax stamps already, but nope.

  6. Dont spray wd40 into the can and forget to clean it out before firing it.

Dont ask me how I know that...
