I was in that squadron. That is an RF-4b Phantom II from Marine Corps Tactical Recon Squadron, VMFP-3. Before the days of satellites, we took high resolution photos. The dark spot at 4 o'clock of the number 6, is a camera window. One on each side and one underneath. Based out of El Toro, CA.
I was at Ramstein AB in 1984 just before they transitioned to the F16. Loved the Phantoms. The F16 replaced them like a Ford Fiesta replaces a Lincoln. Wheels, wings and whatever. The Phantoms were an all weather work horse. The Falcons are a great plane, but totally different capabilities. Definitely not all weather back then.
And that would be a Navy F4 Phantom fighter jet. from the Vietnam / Cold war era. The was one hell of a loud jet on take off.
ReplyDeleteTMc CV-66 USS America
That is a recon Phantom jet not a fighter!!!
