Commentary: Reckoning with the Riots

The showdown is coming over urban violence in America. The continuing rioting and destruction erupting in new cities every few days is almost certain to provide yet another profound demarcation of opinion over how to govern the United States and address the problems that have so stirred the country since the killing of African American George Floyd by a white Minneapolis policeman on May 25. America’s toleration of a completely unjustifiable level of general violence compared to anything in its past demonstrates considerable progress in civility and restraint in the past 50 years.

In 1968, the legendary mayor of Chicago, Richard J. Daley, attracted great controversy but not majority disapproval when he publicly told his police not to hesitate to fire live ammunition at violent demonstrators and rioters. As the immense disturbances surrounding the Democratic National Convention in that city evolved, the mayor indicated that he was not exactly urging his officers to shoot to kill but to shoot to stop the rioting, and implicitly, not to be overly concerned if some lawbreakers died as a result.

There was widespread support for this position. Eleven people were killed, about 500 injured, and more than 2,150 arrested in Chicago; four months earlier, in the riots in at least nine major cities after the assassination of Martin Luther King, 43 were killed, more than 3,000 injured, and over 20,000 arrested.

  1. I think "African American George Floyd" should be shortened to "thug George Floyd". Fewer syllables, less typing. Arthritics coast to coast would appreciate the gesture.

  2. Lost me in the first paragraph. Floyd died of heart failure brought on by a drug overdose. That's what the Coroner's report said.

    1. That was a white wash (no pun intended) intended to exonerate Derrick Chauvin.

    2. Funny this guy guy references Mayor Daley of Chicongo, a died in the wool Demonrat, who took the exact opposite position regarding "demonstrators" that his modern party has tacitly allowed and in some cases has tried to openly condone the tactics of these terrorists, while condemning federal marshals is extremely disturbing. I understand that all of these actions by AntiFa and BLM are right out of the communist takeover play book, I just don't get why the Demonrats are displaying their true anti-American sentiments. Surely they don't think that everyday Americans aren't greatly disturbed by what's going on out there and will vote against the party that is condoning and in some cases encouraging this lawlessness.

    2. if the cops shot them, it would be "evidence" of the "fascist police state"

better to back-alley make them disappear. a few at a time. quiet. no one will notice until much later.

the fear of "going missing" at the rallies will work just as well..and the rumor that it could be one of their own will work it's paranoid magic.

  5. Nemo, buddy thats just not true. Either you are mistaken, speaking about something you don't know about, or you are intentionally not telling the truth.

  6. I had a professor in my ROTC department who was a Chicago city cop during the ‘68 convention. He told some great stories.

  8. A handful of snipers on rooftops would provide fast relief. Too bad these dem governors and mayors are such pussies. Hopefully their subjects will revolt and "demonstrate" their displeasure in the upcoming election.

  9. I've been doing some research on defense against those green laser pointers. anyone have any practical knowledge on the subject? the most I've been able to find are some very expensive red lens safety glasses.

if they used 'em in portland it won't be long before it comes to your AO and we should be ready..

    1. I heard the best defense is lead, any size dose as long as fairly high velocity.
Tends to disrupt the beam particles by rapid red fluid loss of the delivery system.

    2. if you can't see them, you can't shoot them...and a laser has a lot more range than your firearm.

a laser doesn't have to actually hit the target. it's not a pinpoint weapon. you can sweep until you find the target...and they've been doing this to aircraft miles away.

go ahead, shoot at a target from several miles away that can find your face with a laser in seconds, blind you permanently, and move on. good luck.

  10. It gets worse. Green laser pointers (GLPs) initially generate infrared, which is converted to visible green light by passing the IR through a "KTP" (potassium titanyl phosphate) crystal. Not all IR gets converted to green light, so there is usually an IR-blocking filter. A simple malicious conversion would be to remove the filter. Now you have a dual-wavelength device that emits visible green and not-visible IR. TWO frequencies to defend against.

I suppose it also would be possible to remove the KTP crystal, giving you an invisible eye-damaging ray. (Actual engineers correct me on this if I'm FOS here.) With this mod the purpose would NOT be to distract opponents in the heat of the moment, but to sneakily cause irreparable eye damage.

I'm not revealing any deep secrets here. This is all widely available knowledge. There's also this kid on YouTube turning out scary-high powered (still portable and battery operated) laser pointers.

  11. George Floyd was a suicide.
He chose to suicide with an overdose of illegal drugs while committing crimes against his neighbors and his community.
