My son, the Certified Jeweler says: We use a mixture of ammonia and Mr Clean, which powers through dirt and gunk In a similar manner, but puts off fumes that would choke a horse.
I suspect that is just regular old ultrasonic cleaning liquid though. The ultrasonic waves do most of the work- using just water in there will still clean well.
Definitely the cool looking clouds of dirt were caused by the waves.

Hydro flu ric acid is dangerous stuff. I wouldn’t be doing that unless the set-up was in a hood, and I was wearing protective gloves and clothing.
