Dr. Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950), known as “The Father of Black History,” was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, the son of former slaves. He received his doctorate from Harvard, rose to prominence as a writer and historian, and was the editor of The Journal of Negro History. He is best known for establishing Black History Week, which evolved into Black History Month.
In 1924 Dr. Woodson compiled from the U. S. Census records of 1830 the names and numbers of free Black owners of slaves, listed by State, along with the number of slaves owned by each. The statistics were copied by three assistants under his supervision, personally reviewed by Dr. Woodson, and published in Free Negro Owners of Slaves in the United States in 1830, Together with Absentee Ownership of Slaves in the United States in 1830. (Washington, DC: The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, 1924.)
Most of the listings are in the South, but there are also listings of free Black owners of slaves in the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. In the North, Pennsylvania had the most number of free Black owners of slaves, numbering twenty-three, with New York and New Jersey next.

Well now, That's REALLY gonna mess up the whole 'who owes who reparations' scam now.
ReplyDeleteAnd lest we forget, in order for there to be a buyer, there has to be a SELLER. Can't wait for the reparations crowd to go to Mother Africa to confront the descendants of slave SELLERS to demand reparations from THEM.
DeleteSurprisingly no one ever mentions the numbers of Indian slaves held by Yankees. I wonder why?
ReplyDeleteAnd some Indians enslaved other Indians.
DeleteAlso rarely mentioned are the thousands of WHITE indentured servants throughout the colonies. Hell, Georgia started out as "penal colony". Not mentioned in the article is one of the largest slave owners in Alabama was a "free black man" from Montgomery County. One of the larger slave owners in Louisiana was "free black woman"! A free black could do most anything, but vote. The harsher "race laws" didn't come about until after The War Between The States during the Jim Crow era. With a little research one can find that many free blacks owned all sorts of "property" including their fellow man (and women). Many native Americans owned slaves. The Cherokees owned app. 1600 before the "Removal" from northern GA, AL, and SE Tennessee. By 1860 there were 4000 black slaves in the Cherokee portion of the Indian territory. When one thinks of Native American Indians plodding along in the "Trail of Tears" they envision ragged Indians slogging along with bodies piling up alongside the trails. This did take place to varying degrees, but there were also wealthy Indians riding in wagons with their black slaves accompanying them to their new homes in the west.

BLM and ANTIF trash don't want this kind of history being taught/remembered. It doesn't fit the narrative.
I lived in Buckingham for many years. Dr. Woodson was born down near the James River not far past the present day Central Community Health Center. I too was on the James and his birth place was about six mile down river from me. He said it like it was and lots a blacks don't like that.
ReplyDeleteNope, they know and discard it somehow....oh that's right, those were black republicans or Uncle Toms, acting on behalf of some rich white guy.
ReplyDeleteNot going to be a problem, repeat after me; it’s all whiteys fault, see how easy that was.
ReplyDeleteI’m still trying to figure how much reparations I might be responsible for. Of my 4 grand parents one grandmother was the first to be born in the US, came from ireland, one grandfather came from ireland by way of canada so that clears my dads folks. My maternal grandmother was native american and dutch- probably clear there, maternal grandfather- that one may cost me a few bucks- a mississippi farmer back several generations who preferred black hands to work his fields.
I saved that as a PDF to pull out every February to teach a little history.
ReplyDeleteEver wonder how many black slaves Al Sharpton's ancestors had?
ReplyDeleteThe largest slave owner in the history of New Orleans was a Black woman.
ReplyDeleteGaurandamnteed this little essay will never make into the MSM or any other narrative of black history.
