Coronavirus hasn't devastated the homeless as many feared

SAN FRANCISCO — When the coronavirus emerged in the U.S. this year, public health officials and advocates for the homeless feared the virus would rip through shelters and tent encampments, ravaging vulnerable people who often have chronic health issues.

They scrambled to move people into hotel rooms, thinned out crowded shelters and moved tents into designated spots at sanctioned outdoor camps.

While shelters saw some large COVID-19 outbreaks, the virus so far doesn't appear to have brought devastation to the homeless population as many feared. However, researchers and advocates say much is unknown about how the pandemic is affecting the estimated half-million people without housing in the U.S.

In a country that's surpassed 5 million identified cases and 169,000 deaths, researchers don't know why there appear to be so few outbreaks among the homeless.

    Yes. Curious that.

  3. Living rough will toughen you up, or kill you all by itself.

I was shocked that the Chinese Coronavirus didn't kill more homeless people. Maybe it is because not many homeless are obese?

    1. It's because, like Legionnaire's Disease, Corona-Chan dies outside. It needs a closed-air system at just the perfect temperatures to exist. Cold air, below 70 degrees, hampers it immensely.

So what temps are nursing homes and hospitals set at? Right between 75 and 82 degrees, the perfect range for survival of the beast.

  4. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this one out:

Obviously, crowding large numbers of people into confined spaces leads to a higher infection rate. But what else is true of the homeless?

    They live OUTDOORS.

Yet, locally parks are closed or access is limited, we are encouraged to stay home and indoors. TPTB need to open their eyes.

    1. I know a kid who was working a lawn job and who finally got on with the city park and rec last fall doing similar outdoor work. A couple months ago they had him spending 6 weeks removing the park benches all over town.

    2. Minnesota may have Democrat idiots running it, but they were smart enough not to close the parks, or forbid outdoor activities. They even closed a bunch of roads around the lakes in Minneapolis, just to give more people more places to walk and bike in the outdoors.

It was one of the few things they did right.

  6. Could it be that the homeless have immune systems that have been exposed to things that few of us even know exist? Nowadays, most children leave a nice sterile hospital, go to a home that's been thoroughly disinfected, and grow up in an environment where dirt is considered an enemy. It's no wonder kids are allergic to everything, they're never exposed to anything that might build up immunities. The homeless are exposed to things that will scare the crap out of COVID-19. Those that survive the onslaught stand a better chance of fighting off the COVID Monster than those of us that douse ourselves in hand sanitizer every time we touch a door handle.

    1. I was looking for someone to bring up this theme. Your immune system needs exercise. You just don't want to overwhelm it.
I used to think that working in a hospital lab gave me a cast iron immune system. I'm not quite that arrogant anymore, but what you say about kids is exactly right on. Go out and play in the dirt!

    2. If you read some truth, you might learn that the covid is almost as deadly as the seasonal flu. The covid is a mere fart compared to the flu of 1968 -1969, and nothing closed down. No one wore masks. I got married for the first time and I can't even remember talking about it.
The covid is a psyops and most of you morons fell head over teacups to submit to the commies. Bet your are proud.

  8. Shouldn't "feared" be 'hoped' in the headline?
The more we learn, the less deadly this deadly pandemic is, the more our fine media betters try to obfuscate the issue.
The response is more deadly and far worse than the disease for everybody but our betters.

  9. It should be obvious that their immune system is better due to its constant exposure to a variety of pathogens. The more you eliminate germs from your environment, the less your natural immunity has to contend with. What's the old saying....use it or lose it? That saying can be applied to many things.

  10. It's b/c the virus is sentient. I mean, it stays out of supermarkets and off of cashier's hands. And out in my neck of the woods it's more sinister. Out here, if you schedule an appointment for 5 kids with a doctor on the same day, the virus knows and it'll infect teh entire office. So I have to take 2 days off for eye appointments for all 5 kids.

  12. The way I understand things, our bodies have a part of our immune system that is always combining things and coming up with different mechanisms to fight off biological invaders that do not even exist yet, so that when a new hazard presents itself, like the Coronavirus that is now hitting us, our bodies either have already got natural immunity or can develop it, in a short time, after exposure to the virus or bacteria that presents itself. But if we continue to attempt to isolate ourselves from this current virus, all we are doing is extending the length of time that it will take for us to get past this so called pandemic.
I predict that the end of the governors requirements will happen just about the same time that all of the votes for president have been counted. When 10 of the first 11 governors to shut down their states were Democrats, that has to mean something, and it wasn't that Democrats are more cautious with the people's health.

  15. The so-called "homeless" are just like the Africans in Central Africa. I grew up there, my brother still lives there and as far as Zambia is concerned, the CovId-19 is a none event. Why? Because every cold and flu infection is also caused by a corona virus. The people in Zambia have been exposed to so many variants of corona virus that this new one is just shrugged off. The people live in conditions which people in the US cannot even comprehend. Medical services? Forget it, completely. In Zambia you go to hospital to die.

    1. A common condition where many of the newer, more virulent viruses flourish is a selenium deficient soil, as in much of Africa and in a diagonal band crossing much of China from northeast to southwest. And yes, that band goes right through Wuhan.

Most viruses can be shut down by the insertion of some foreign matter in only one address of the virus' relatively simple genome. Minerals like zinc and selenium get metabolized by the body into "fighter" compounds, some of which can find the weak link in the viral genome and shut it down. The trick is finding the right compound that will do its magic in the genome. Tony knows this, but don't bother asking the cocksucker to explain it.
