Reminds me of my place

When we had that tornado here about 15 months ago, a branch took out the power lines at the SE corner of my property and the power company asked if they could drive their trucks down there to repair it. It's not like I had a lot of choice - either that or do without power. Their bucket truck got stuck because of all the rainfall, then the truck they brought in to retrieve it got stuck, so they called in yet another truck to pull both of them out. As a result, my place was crisscrossed with ruts a good six inches deep. Before I got them filled in, grass was growing where it was once weeds and clover, and even after I got them filled, you can still see where they were - the grass grows greener and faster there.

  1. Yup, water collects in ruts, allowing it to grow stuff faster. When some people root plow pastures, they ask for the machine to drive perpendicular to slope so that the ruts will trap water instead of it running away as soon as possible. As long as the ruts exist, it works.

Watch out for those ruts sir, you can turn an ankle walking across the lawn if you aren't paying attention.

  2. The maestro Robert A Heinlein wrote "Stranger in a Strange Land" in which the hero remarks that he groks grass likes to be walked on.

  3. I'll let you all into a trick for growing lawns rather than flatweed/clover patches.

    1. Use a mulching mower
    2. Never remove clippings from lawn
    3. Cut 2 steps below maximum cut height and NEVER cut at minimum height (where everyone goes wrong)
Thick green weed and clover free lawns like mine can be yours too ☺

    1. I do all that and I'm still overgrown with weeds and clover and I mow every 4-5 days.
But..... There's one area that I cut down to almost nothing - a 35x20 foot area where I shoot so I can find my pistol brass easier - and when I do let it come up, it's very luxurious grass. It was all weeds before.
