#1 is really not very steep. Most experienced climbers would walk up it the same way. I suspect the guys with the rope are learning how to rappel. And where do you even get twisted climbing rope anymore?
#5 is a fun ride! In the daylight, in good weather... 250 feet from a dead stop to flying! Note that he doesn't even bother grabbing the stick until he clears the deck.
At least from what I remember seeing on the first generation F-18s... The pilot keeps his hand off the stick during the cat shot. Your inner ear will sense a straight, direct acceleration like that of a cat-shot and interpret that you are getting an upward vector. The instinct is to push the stick back down and forward to fight the perception of "up" which would be bad. As soon as they would hit the and of the cat, the hand immediately goes to the stick. Good stuff.

ReplyDeleteI think that's the way takeoffs are supposed to work. You don't touch the stick until you're airborne.
