Kids should learn to be more aware of their surroundings and not rely on people stopping. Nowhere else in the world are people expected to stop for school busses letting children unaware of their surroundings out onto the street. No wonder American kids grow up to be unaware snowflakes, demanding the world stop and meet their needs.
That's not entirely true either. Canada also has stop laws. The majority of other countries that have school bus routes don't require stopping, but you must pass the bus at an incredibly slow speed, 20 km/h is common. The bus driver is also required to not open the doors if any vehicle is nearby and/or passing. The bus driver is legally responsible for the children. Some countries like Germany mostly use public transportation for their school kids only the most rural districts have a bus route.
#9 happened not to far from me. The bus driver was hailed a hero. She stopped the bus, put up the stop sign and lights, and the driver following swung around her and passed on the shoulder at speed. Right where the kid would have stepped out of the bus. She saw it coming in time to stop the kid from getting hit.
