People who do this sort of thing, stop. My wife gets chilled and nervous when she sees pictures of rock climbers. Me, I don't care. You want to be known as Splat, it's your choice as an American.
Alex is the world's greatest free climber. He's storied for sure. There's no one in his class and probably never will be.
On the other hand, he's a militant atheist. And a split second away from falling to his death. Wouldn't want to be him, wouldn't change places with him for all the money in the world.
It is a good documentary. He free climbs El Capitain (sp?). A lot of his friends from around the world died free climbing other places while he was preparing to make the ascent. He actually makes his living doing this. Crazy.
Is that worse than being a timid, stay-at-home type who does nothing with their life and ends up dying a slow death by cancer or Alzheimers? To each their own.
I wouldn't even do one of those inside climbing walls where you are roped up to the ceiling. I am a ham radio operator from the age of 12, and am now 60. I have climbed on roofs, up trees, and up towers. But not on sheer rock faces. Not a chance.
Wife's co-worker's husband was an experienced free climber. The had his funeral a couple months ago. Grabbed a rock. The rock let go. Took a week or so to find the body.
He should help all of his friends and relatives out by posting on a some web site where a donation to some charity can be sent in lieu of flowers.
Sooner or later, the inevitable will occur. As Chuck Yeager once said, "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots."
Everything is fine until it isn't. Then that rush you get turns from adrenaline in your system to the wind in your ears. The splat calculator helps with the numbers. https://www.angio.net/personal/climb/speed.html

ReplyDeleteI think I'll stick with sporting clays. At least if I miss a bird I don't die.

ReplyDeleteIs the upside of success worth the downside of failure?

Who pays him? Certainly not me.
DeleteWell, we all got to be good at something!
ReplyDeleteAlex was always an adventurous, thrill-seeking child right up to the time he became a blood-splatter on a canyon floor...
