How a 'Hillbilly Brigade' saved an Oregon town from raging wildfires

MOLALLA, Ore. (Reuters) - Nicole West steered her bulldozer through the smoldering forest, pushing logs into the underbrush and away from the wildfires ripping through Oregon's Cascade Mountains. Her border collie, Oink, rode shotgun as West and a volunteer crew raced to clear a fire line.

Behind West, on the front lines of the 136,000-acre (55,000-hectare) Riverside fire, two young men pulled a water tank behind their pickup truck, struggling to douse the flames.

  2. Over 20 years ago the Hayman fire west of Colorado Springs was the largest ever in the state and was threatening to make a run eastward out of the foot hills and hit the city. About 30 miles away the Cripple Creek and Victor Mining Company decided to take action: they disassembled, loaded onto several flatbed trucks, and took 2 of their giant earthmovers to the front line, offering to cut a firebreak alongside a state highway to slow or stop the movement of the fire. Those big boys are the ones with the huge tires taller than a dump truck. For whatever reason, fire command told the miners to take their giant machines and go home. The fire burned on for several days but luckily the city was not touched. (Sadly, several years later an arson fire got into the city with dramatic scenes and devestation similar to the huge Oakland fires).

Moral of the story: turf wars can be fought even in the worst of times.

And please Lord, bless their hyperactive, lovable, intelligent dogs too.
    Amen.

  5. That's the old America. We didn't need experts or government. We came together to fix the issue. Just help or get out of the way.
