See, there are still good people out there

EPHRATA, Pa. — A couple in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, is getting a lot of attention after they found tens of thousands of dollars in cash.

Mark and Alicia Steffy, owners of Steffy's Towing in Ephrata, salvage abandoned vehicles as part of their business. Over the years, they have found personal items in some of the cars and tried to find the rightful owners.

  1. Very unusual. Usually tow companies steal all they find in a car

    1. Even more unusual that the police returned it all to the couple instead of pulling that asset forfeiture as only a crook would carry that much money.

  2. I have a BA, BS, and MS degrees. My wife is all but dissertation on her doctorate. We have worked all our lives. Between wife's savings, my savings, our checking account and retirement funds we still don't have as much as that couple had in cash. I find it very hard to believe that was not dirty money and the couple just chose to live out the out of hotels for nefarious purposes.

    1. Wrong! You dont have much money because you got degrees instead. Living like a person who has no money allows us to accumulate large amounts of (honest!) money. Lots of people have money but you would never know by looking at us or our houses or our cars.

    2. It was still their money. Unless someone proves in a court room that these people came by this money illegally, then they have a right to their own property.
When I was young, pretty much everyone would turn money in that they found. Now, it rates a news story, since there are so many greedy people that would screw anyone and just keep the money for themselves. The times have changed.

    3. It's true in my experience, having multiple degrees does correlate with poor personal finance skills. I've dealt with lots of people with six figure incomes and nothing saved over the years.

  3. Seriously? My mother worked in a sewing factory. My dad was an auto body mechanic. They have more than that in their safe in cash. As do I.
