No disrespect, to each his own. I'm a combat Vet USMC, Nam 68/69, 0351. 100% disabled. Medevac to Guam in 69 only to be patched up and sent back for more fun. I cannot abide a man my age wearing his fuckin hat backwards. Or cover if you want to go all USMC. I'm a white boy and the bill goes in the front. Nope, I don't care if this pisses anyone off. I aint looking to be Mr. Popular.
That was my first thought too. The word "dude" drives me nuts too. I'm 66 and I never served. To young for Vietnam, too old for anything else. Thank you for serving Bright Eyes.
It may be as unremarkable as mine. Both my First Sergeant and CO told me I was a great soldier, yet my 214 shows absolutely nothing. I wasn't even awarded the Good Conduct Medal when I was discharged, and that's pretty much a given to anybody that didn't get an Article 15 or Court Martial.
You can have addendum's made to your DD-214. If it means enough to you the Good Conduct absolutely should be on it. I was awarded The Navy Commendation with Combat V after my discharge. It took a couple months to catch up with me. I had it added to my DD-214. Ya know Kenny it pisses me off they did not give you this. Sounds like you were a better soldier then your Sarge or CO. They did not do their jobs, at least in my eyes.
Oh, I'm not worried about it - it's kinda like a participation trophy in my eyes. And to be honest with you, while I was a great soldier in the field doing my job and more to the utmost of my ability, I was a fuck-up in garrison. It seems like I was always pulling extra duty for some minor offence or another. But, both my First Sergeant and CO were great guys. They knew how to get the job done without being assholes and treated their troops fairly. If I were to ever run into them again, I'd shake their hands and buy them a beer and dinner.
I hear ya loud and clear. However, if your company or battalion, as a whole, received any type of medals they are yours too. For instance, I have the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry or something like that. It wasn't given to me but to my battalion. It's on my DD 214. I have one or two others I got like that but I forget what they are. When I got out I was working on my third row of cabbage. I was a shit bird. State side I'd a never made it. I'd a got what we called Captains Mass and surely would a been in the brig a time er two. Fighting, fuckin and getting fucked up was what we called liberty.
I was in the peacetime Army. The only awards my unit may have gotten was making beer runs in the ice and snow. To be honest with you, I didn't even realize I hadn't gotten my Good Boy Award until about 10 years ago when I got a copy of my 214 for some reason or another.
In 1972 the South Vietnam congress awarded the individual Cross of Gallantry to every person who served in a military capacity and to every unit that served in Vietnam.
