The Best AR-15 Magazines

I use Magpul magazines and never had an issue with them.
I've got a dozen metal GI magazines that I brought with me from California, but I replaced the followers in them with Magpul followers and never had any problems with them either. Actually, I didn't have any problems with them before, but I was hanging out in my local gunshop a few years ago and saw packages of the followers for sale, so I bought a fistful of them - one of those just-in-case deals.

  1. I've had problems with Magpul. They get loose flashing from the plastic injection molding in them sometimes and jam up the mag. I'd say 1 out of 50.

  2. When I purchased my AR, an M&P, I was told "don't get larger mags and put them in there, stick to the one that came with it", which was a Magpul 20. What would be the concern, a heavier mag can bend fittings, or what?

    1. Why they would tell you that is crazy. Maybe they woke up stupid that day.

  3. TMK, I haven't had any issues with Magpul mags yet. USGI mags are hit and miss but it comes down to the brand and the followers. If your follower doesn't have guides on it, the it is at risk for nose diving inside the mag which is a disaster.

  4. Cooper USGI 30-round aluminum magazines are known problem children. Generally oversized dimensionally and can be hard to insert/extract from mag well and will not fall free. Some will not fit at all. They lost their government contract over this.

Sanchez USGI 30-round aluminum magazines were known to have follower problems, but replace the followers with Magpul and they're good to go. Sanchez fixed the problem later on but I don't know how to tell the difference.

  5. About the only problem I have had between various aluminum, steel, and Pmags is which rifle likes what. All of my AR15s like all of them but my KelTec RDB will only work well with Pmags. I also just built a AR308 and my choices for mags are Pmags in 10, 20, or 25 rounds so I go with the 25s. Two of em cost almost $50. My other choice was ProMag. I will not own ProMag. They suck. I hate them enough that if you were to give me any, I would say, "oh look, targets." Bottom line for me the Pmags have been 100% reliable and they are the only brand that has and I can use in everything.

    1. I bought two DD mags a couple months ago Before all this started to try out and have been very happy with them. Now I want to buy a few more....sold out.

They feed as well as a magpul and the 32 round capacity is nice. Doing some run/gun type matches and training I had a little trouble a couple times getting a Pmag loaded to 30 seated on a closed bolt. The DD mags will hold 32 rounds and seat easier than a Pmag loaded to 30 from my experience. I usually download my Pmags to 29, but with the DDs I load to 30 and they seat very easily. Kinda expensive but worth the money IMO.

  8. Magpul or C-Products SS is all I use. No issues with either brand and all of them have been constantly loaded for the last three years. I regularly test each mag once a year.

  10. I use Metal Brownell 20 rounders exclusively. no problems ever. have some plastic 10 rounders, maybe hexmold-total pieces of shit. my 30 round pmags are for when the troubles come. I use my 20 rounders for the range, club rules limit mag loads to 10 and I find 20 rounders work better prone and on the bench.

  11. C-Products is by far the best. Several years ago we built a bullet proof 7.62 by 39 AR Bolt. (Pun Intended). That solves one problem, the next was mags. C-Products worked through several Iterations working with my engineer until the got it nailed. Good people too.

  12. I use a mixture GI Aluminum, C-Products Stainless Steel, Magpul and (and I got 1 Daniel defense With the MK 18 pistol I bought) As far as GI aluminum goes I have fired then in an FNC, Tavor and AR-15s from Daniel Defense, and a Trump Lower made by Quentin Arms and a Ted Nugent Spearchucker Upper with no problems. I have had the GI aluminum since 1192 with no problems BTW. I try to to buy the C-Products magazines But if I have the money and Magpuls are on sale I pick those up as well.
