Is that cotton? Did he set that on fire intentionally? Looks like he pulled out a lighter.
It looks like he pulled out a knife and was slashing at the red sack that would not open.Somehow he struck a spark. Perhaps the sack had a metal fastener?

Something was caught on whatever he flipped.He got a hold of it but couldn't pull it out. So he thought, oh - I'll burn that strand....Forgot where he was standing.
You ain't stopping no racist cotton fire. It was nice of the one guy to be so helpful by fanning the flames.

The idiot could not untie the twine holding the canvas around the ball of hauled cotton (too poor to have a knife but not smokes) so he tried to burn it apart with a lighter. Idiot's are not solely found in USA.
