Virginia Legislators Pass Bill To Ban Cops From Stopping Cars For No Headlights At Night, Other Violations

Chesterfield, VA – Virginia is poised to drastically reduce the circumstances in which law enforcement officers will be permitted to conduct traffic stops and enforce traffic laws.

Proponents of Senate Bill 5029 and House Bill 5058 argue that police have been targeting black people and pulling them over for unwarranted stops and searches, the Daily Press reported.

The legislation, which passed the General Assembly and has been sent to Virginia Governor Ralph Northam to be signed into law, bans law enforcement officer from stopping vehicles for driving without headlights, driving without working tail lights or brake lights, or driving with expired registration unless it has been expired for at least three months, WSLS reported.

  1. Let'm ride around with no lights in the dark. Give'em all the crack and guns they want too.

  2. Who can I sue when I am hit by a car driving without lights?
Of course, NOT those morons that proposed this.

  4. Great eyes those cops have. I can't tell a driver's race at night. Wish I had eyesight like that.

    1. They can see a 1 day out of date inspection sticker, with a 1 inch tall number on a windshield (different date than registration sticker on licence plate) at 120 yards on a moving car. It is like they can see just fine when they want to, but don't notice things which would involve non-revenue protection of the public.

  6. The elephant in the room we never speak of is; the unwillingness or inability to follow rules garners the attention by the police.

  8. Bunch a good ol boys up in Massies Mill decided driving at night without headlights was cool. They liked blowing by people at high speeds and scaring the shit outta them. Problem was lots a good ol boys decided this was cool and they killed about three or four of themselves with head ons and rear enders afore they decided it weren't cool.

  9. Expired tags isn't such a big deal, but the lights...that's definitely going to be a major safety thing.

  12. How asinine can folks be to think it is ok to drive without headlights, not working tail/brake lights etc? I'm having a hard time believing this actually past their legislature.

  13. I second Ed357.

I left a job site at a hospital in the downtown area early one morning - about 2:00 AM. I was tired as hell and just wanted to go home and go to bed. I got about a block down the street headed for the interstate when a cop's light-show goes off behind me. I pulled over. He asked for my papers and I gave them to him, but I wasn't speeding, so I asked him what the problem was. His answer was that I was driving at 2:00AM without any lights on. I looked down and sure enough, my lights were off. I laughed and said: "Yeah, sorry about that officer. I would have noticed it myself as soon as I got out of all of these street lights."

He told me then that the most common indicator of a DUI was driving at night without any lights. I had on scrubs and he could see that I had just come from work, so I didn't even get "the test". He just handed me my papers and said: "Drive safe and have a good night."

That was many years ago, but recent events got me thinking. If I were a black man, in that neighborhood,(and hadn't been wearing scrubs), would the outcome have been different?

    1. the outcome probably would have been the same if the hypothetical black man didnt cop a shitty attitude, run his mouth, do the opposite of what is asked, and generally act a fool like 90%+ I see in all the so-called police abuse videos.
