Plans to Disarm Portland State Campus Police on Hold After Too Many Quit

Portland State University announced in August its plan to disarm campus police officers by replacing their firearms with tasers, but those plans have been put on a temporary hold.

The plan to disarm officers was announced earlier in 2020 after rallies and protesters at PSU called for justice for Jason Washington, who was killed by officers in 2018. Campus Reform reported on the efforts of PSU students and staff to disarm officers in 2019.

  1. Yeah, surrendering to the mob will work out just great.

  2. College cops, for when you need a mall cop with authority. No damn reason a college cop should be armed. Not much of a reason for colleges to have their own police forces. Never seen a college cop who wasn't nothing but a glorified writer of parking tickets and underaged beer patrol.

    1. IIRC, PSU started arming its campus cops after a series of rapes. Strange how becoming a victim make some more welcoming to the presence of fire arms...

    3. A lot of colleges are located in truly squalid, violent areas. Not sure if they were always located that way, or if scumbags gravitated towards the easy pickings of young students. But there you have it.

    4. Sometimes they can be in the right place and be helpful:

  3. Too bad the rest of us can't just quit being citizens when the government wants to disarm us.

  4. Gee. I wonder how many Affirmative Action/Politically Correct check marks on application. Sounds queer as a three dollar bill.

  5. I'd prefer colleges/universities rely on local law enforcement, as resulting interactions should be processed through the courts rather than whatever disciplinary panel full of activists the facility has. That said, if you have a security force that will have to interact with young violent males, the option for lethal force needs to be on the table. Including concealed carry for staff and students on campus.

  6. Underaged beer patrol? I had one back in the 60's who would BUY beer for us!

  7. Hang on a sec.
Could this 'story' have some omitted information?
    For example:
    * How many 2019 staff and students on that property compared to how many working from home in 2020?

And who, pray tell, pays any attention at all to somebody named 'Campus Reform'?

  9. City of Portland is having the same problem, gee wonder why, dumb fucks. So the understaffed campus police will have to call the understaffed city police that don't respond to violent calls anymore, what could go wrong???

  10. Mtnman: what's the problem? Portland will send social workers, who will de escalate, and resolve any dilemma with healing crystals and guided imagery!
