    3. For the curious, my sister's dog died. I was burying him. Got a couple of feet down and starting bringing up bones of what looked to be another small dog.

Not a complete coincidence probably; we'd picked a location at the back of the property, to the side of the open space to be out of the way, but just far enough from the trees to avoid a lot of roots. The previous owner probably picked that space for the same reason.

  5. #1 is sort of like the talk my dad had with me when I told him I was thinking about enlisting. He said that when the Marines deploy they sleep in the mud. The Army gets to put up a tent to sleep in the mud when they deploy. He added the Navy is out on their ships and he explained what "Hot Bunking" was. Dad then added that his deployments with the Air Force had room service.

I was in a different fucking Air Force.

  6. When it Okinawa, Marines volunteer to go to kadena air base to off load air force cargo plane as stevedores. Sleep out in the weather on the airfield between flights 24 hours a day, just for the perk of eating in a Air Force chow hall.
That’s the difference between service branches.

  8. That is the order of food quality in the services. It was just as true in 92 as it was in 2009.

  9. I don't know. I was in the Navy but I have eaten in a few Air Force chow halls. They were just like everybody else's chow halls. The food was okay but certainly not what was pictured. On the other hand, I was a submariner in the Navy and while on the boat, we did indeed eat like kings. On halfway night we really did have steak and lobster.

    1. When I was in the army and took my schooling at Sheppard AFB, every Friday night was Steak and Lobster Night and the other 6 days were outstanding. The best part was due to training schedules, the chow hall was open 24 hours a day. I put on 35 pounds in 14 weeks.

    2. when I worked the front gate of the base during desert shield, we had a local supply truck come on the base every thursday with a load of fresh steaks and live lobsters. the invoice said it was for the enlisted mess. well every friday I'd go to the mess and no steak, and no lobsters.

I had another guy o na security tail the truck. it would go to the enlisted mess, where it would get paid for out of the e-mess budget, but he'd swing up to the officer's club to deliver the food.

turned out every friday the officers club would have a steak and lobster feed, with tickets going for $30 each, and all the money going right into the commander running the enlisted mess's pocket.

meanwhile, our food was getting worse and the portions were getting tiny. half a cup of powdered eggs, one half slice of bacon and a thimble full of instant orange juice is breakfast? oh hell no. so screw this guy. sent a copy of the invoices and some other stuff to his command. they relieved him and the food suddenly got better.
