Want, Need, Gotta Have

I joined a FB group a year or two ago called 'Everything Firearms' or some such shit where members ask for advice and post pictures of their guns, both storebought and pieced together. Some of those AR builds are atrocious. Somebody will post a picture of their rifle with a laser, flashlight, scope with red dot mounted on top with offset sights on the rail, a vertical foregrip mounted on the side, handstop on the bottom rail, a 100 round drum and a fucking bipod, and there's people commenting shit like "Oh yeah, sweet build, man". There's so much shit on those guns that the owner would have to physically hunt for the trigger. If they can buy it and find a place to mount it, they would.

  1. Jeebus, but that looks foolish and unsafe.
    I mean, where's his facemask?

... though the dove is a nice touch.

    1. Dove? I thinks that's an old hood ornament of a flying goddess. Plymouth maybe.

  2. But how do you know when to stop upgrading your rifle? The addiction is real.

    Ha ha

  4. I suspect the Swiss army knife tells the tale. Sadly, AR builds do not come with a /sarc font.

  8. I wish I had taken a picture of an upgraded BB gun I saw a few years ago at a gun show. It had flashlight, laser, bayonet, etc. attached to a Red Ryder BB gun.

  9. It's not about function or practicality. It's about "because I can."
Anyone who owns a Taurus Judge very quickly discovers it to be a sometimes-well-made (and sometimes not) gun that is very suited at doing NOTHING well. The ONLY purpose at which it excels is being a Judge. The only reason to choose a Judge over a .45 Colt revolver or a shotgun is the "because I can" factor.
Or the Ruger Alaskan .454 I quite proudly own - and carry (albeit with lower power ammo). It does absolutely zilch as a carry gun that I cannot achieve with other, lighter, more ergonomic handguns, and as a rifle replacement, it sucks hard and heavy rocks due to the insane recoil. I have it because I can.
Which comes back to the AR builds. Mine are all practical, but that is me; my stupid guns fall in other categories. But "whoy do it? Eff you and I can, thats why" is and has always been a perfectly legitimate reason.

    1. I know somebody who ditched their 38 revolver for a Taurus Judge. Of course, the only thing the revolver was used for is killing snakes. They switched, because the 38 rat shot cartridges did not always kill large rattlers with one shot, but the 410 shot shells would. About the only thing the Taurus Judge excels at is pest control, including would be carjackers.

    2. I have a Judge and use it as a sidearm for hiking in the woods. When it came out, Federal developed a .410 shell for it--four pellets of 000 buckshot with a fast charge for the short barrel. What I'd like to supplement that with is some hardcast .45 Colt as a backup to the buckshot for those critters that need added persuasion.
Everything is about compromises, and for my purposes, a rabid skunk or raccoon, or rattlesnakes, it suits my needs. For cougar or black bear (also endemic in my area), it's not enough firepower, but the noise is hopefully enough to ward one off.

  10. Oh gawd, that produced quite a flashback to when I was first trying to assess how appropriate Airsoft guns might be for serious training.

I've since learned a great deal more in spite of that, and have embraced Airsoft pretty significantly since, but still...the memory makes me shudder.
