Who doesn't have kindle or the equivalent on their phone? I have 50 to 100 books on mine to chose from in moments where there's no cell reception..... Perhaps the photo should have been labeled 'The Good Old Days'..... circa 1980's..... cell phones didn't become popular or practical until around 1995.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say foreign country. The way they're dressed, the look of the subway car, and it's cleanliness. Above the big dude's shoulder you can see a red sign that doesn't look like english.
I usually carry a book as well as my kindle for the times the kindle turns useless.

After a hundred years, a book copyright expires and several entities scan and post them for free downloading (also other stuff in public domain). Times and places you can never return to...
