NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — A swarm of 17-year Cicadas is projected to emerge in Tennessee this year.
In fact, the University of Tennessee’s Institute of Agriculture says multiple swarms of 17-year and 13-year Cicadas are projected to emerge in the Volunteer State over the next several years.
Perhaps it will be a non-event. They were predicting the same thing for my area (east of you) this past summer and I heard no more than a couple every now and then. When they do emerge around here the noise is amazing.
Amen on the noise. Some years are worse than others. Odd observation. Most years, we have an infestation of "ladybugs", supposedly and more properly they are a form of Japanese beetle. However, this year almost none.
But we have had stink bugs. Really. We find one or two a day flying around our living room lights (into the wood stove they go).
What a fitting way to ring out the old year (@020) and celebrate the installation of the pretender. Stink bugs.
Neither our lady bugs or stink bugs were bad here this year. We had a couple stinkers in the house but that's about it. The year before last, the lady bugs were so bad our kitchen ceiling was covered with them if I left the back door open for more than a couple minutes.
When I was a kid, those things would sing and sing. I'd fall asleep with them singing, then they'd stop and I'd pop awake like a gun went off. That quiet is weird after getting used to them... I kinda hear them all the time now, what with the ears ringing....
been through this in tx not fun not the ciciadas but cicada killers. live in ground inject acid look it up. nasty

ReplyDeleteThose little fuckers can put me to sleep on a not too hot summer night. When they suddenly go quiet, then you need to look around for trouble.

ReplyDeleteSame thing with me when I was a kid and my dad was stationed in Maryland. It got to the point that I wouldn't hear them unless I thought about it.

ReplyDeleteI've noticed that, too. When the lady bugs appear, usually fall around her, the spiders suddenly disappear. No cobwebs in the corners for months.
